I agree with these comments about how unlikely it is that any IANA even *could* take place this year, given the significant amount of work that must be done before that can happen.  It might be appropriate for the community to come up with its own timeline for how this work can be expected to happen that is realistic.

Thanks,
Robin

Weighing in, the whole article struck me as breathlessly overwrought and seriously under-informed.

The notion that failing to meet the September 30th deadline (oops, goal) dooms the effort is absurd. Taking the requisite time means that a well-considered transition and accountability plan can be put in place before the next President takes office in January 2017 , whoever he or she might be.

While election year politics may create some turbulence, the Senate Commerce hearing evidenced that there is bipartisan interest in and concerns about ICANN’s transition but no present threat of obstructive legislation.

James,

Ooof.  That is a pretty basic blunder.   They could lose their political pundit's license for a mistake like that.

The issue is likely to become enmeshed in gridlock in Washington, as the Obama Administration campaigns for the 2016 election.

EurActiv is not the most reliable source for these kind of issues, they are not deeply involved, don't understand ICANN issues well and report primarily about rumors/things they hear ... EurActiv is a good source for EU-legislations but not really about global issues.
