Good day Colleagues,

I am deeply honored to accept the nomination to serve as the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) representative from the African Regional At-Large Organization (AFRALO) within the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) community.

I accept this nomination with humility and a strong sense of responsibility, recognizing the trust placed in me by the community. I am committed to listening, learning, and working collaboratively to ensure that the voices of African end-users are meaningfully represented and translated into impact within ICANN processes.

My representation will focus on strengthening AFRALO’s policy voice within ALAC by translating grassroots African user realities into actionable ICANN policy advice, while expanding meaningful participation and capacity across the region.

What I would do as ALAC Representative (AFRALO)

My contribution is closely aligned with ALAC’s current priorities of policy advice development, capacity building, and effective end-user representation:

1. Strengthen African input into ICANN policy advice

  • I will lead coordinated African contributions to ALAC statements through Public Comment processes.
  • I will translate complex DNS and naming policy issues into clear end-user impacts, including affordability, access, and trust.
  • I will ensure African user perspectives are consistently reflected in ALAC advice to ICANN.

2. Scale capacity building and meaningful participation

  • I will expand AFRALO’s pipeline of At-Large Structures (ALSes) and individual members.
  • I will increase active participation in key groups such as the Consolidated Policy Working Group (CPWG).
  • I will localize ICANN knowledge and engagement for grassroots communities, particularly youth and underserved populations.

3. Bridge outreach, engagement, and policy impact

  • I will align outreach efforts with measurable policy engagement and contribution.
  • I will strengthen the linkage between AFRALO community inputs and ALAC decision-making processes.
  • I will advance ICANN’s accountability and user-focused governance mechanisms through practical implementation.

Strategic Value

Aligned with ALAC’s evolving focus on policy influence, community growth, and accountability, I will:

  • Work to shift AFRALO from participation to measurable policy influence within ICANN processes.
  • Support positioning African end-users as active contributors to DNS governance.
  • Ground ALAC advice in real-world connectivity challenges, including affordability, infrastructure gaps, and last-mile access, ensuring implementation credibility.

I approach this role committed to serving, collaborating, and contributing meaningfully to strengthening Africa’s voice within the global Internet governance ecosystem.

Kind regards
Thoko Miya
