Dear colleague,

The Centre for Refugee Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada, along with a number of Canadian and international institutions, is in the process of developing a Refugee Research Network with the express goal of contributing to the improvement of the well-being of refugees and forced migrants around the world by:

expanding our awareness of the global knowledge regime concerning refugee issues and forced migration improving communication concerning this knowledge within and between academic, policy-making and practice sectors in the Global South and North, and alliance-building and active policy involvement in the development of national and international policy frameworks and humanitarian practices affecting refugees and forced migrants.

For more information about the network, please visit our website at www.refugeeresearch.net. This website has been created to encourage as much online collaboration, networking and information-sharing among researchers doing work on refugee and forced migration-related issues as possible. We use the term "researcher" quite broadly - it encompasses academics affiliated with universities, colleges and other research institutes, field- and community-based researchers, individuals working within the I/NGO, grassroots and governmental sectors who produce various kinds of theoretical and/or policy relevant and practice-based research. We are currently collaborating with 8 international research centres, and 4 international voluntary sector organizations, including the UNHCR, along with a host of Canadian and international researchers, NGO networks and various departments within the Government of Canada.

One of our staff members will be attending a conference in Nairobi this March, and we thought we might seize the opportunity to outreach to interested community agencies, academics and government representatives in and around Nairobi to inform about the network, demonstrate the website and consult with different stakeholders on their needs and expectations about such a network.

If you will be in the Nairobi area on March 12, 2010, we warmly invite your participation in this workshop. It will be held at the Sarova Panafric hotel, from 12:00pm - 4:30pm. While attendance at the workshop is free, numbers are limited to around 30 people, so we do require you to register. Registration deadline is March 5, 2010.
