Welcome to the ICANN77 Policy Forum
|
By Tripti Sinha, ICANN Board Chair, and
Sally Costerton, Interim President and CEO
The first ICANN Public Meeting to take place in the U.S. capital coincides with our Washington, D.C., Engagement Center’s 10-year anniversary and its
recent
reopening [r20.rs6.net] at a new location. We look forward to hosting the ICANN community in this improved space at the center of this important hub of government,
business, civil society, and academia.
As the second ICANN Public Meeting of the calendar year, the Policy Forum is dedicated to the ICANN community’s policy-development work, and a major focus of this
meeting will be the effort to launch the next
round [r20.rs6.net] of the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program.
Whether you are here in person or online, we look forward to seeing you at ICANN77!

New gTLD Program: Next Round Update
|
This session provides attendees with a recap of the implementation status of the New gTLD Program: Next Round following the ICANN Board’s approval of the Final
Report on the New gTLD Program Subsequent Procedures at ICANN76.
The open session also offers the ICANN community an opportunity to engage with the program implementation team and ask questions related to the combined ICANN Board,
community, and org activities in preparation for the New gTLD Program: Next Round.

Upstander Training Session
|
Upstander Training
seeks to reduce instances of disrespect (which can sometimes lead to harassment) by giving participants the tools they need to disrupt those perpetrating the harassment.
This session is open to all ICANN meeting participants and is designed to enhance and complement existing anti-harassment efforts across the community. The session
will be led by a trainer from the nonprofit organization Right to Be, an industry leader in equity and anti-harassment.

GNSO: IDN EPDP Working Session
|
The IDN EPDP team is tasked to determine the approach for a consistent definition of all gTLDs, and to develop policy recommendations that will eventually allow
for the introduction of variant gTLDs at the top-level. The team published its Phase 1 Initial Report for
Public
Comment [r20.rs6.net], which is scheduled to close on 19 June 2023.
At ICANN77, the team will hold a working session each day, with four sessions total, all of which will focus on Phase 2 charter question deliberation related to
variant management at the second-level. The discussion topics are expected to include the behavior of variant labels throughout the domain name life cycle, as well as the treatment of registration data of variant domains. Interested community members are welcome
to observe the sessions.

ICANN77 Session to Focus on Digital Inclusion Through
|
By Joe Catapano, Stakeholder Engagement Senior Manager
The addition of top-level domains (TLDs) to the DNS root zone, many of which are Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), brought many benefits to Internet users
around the world. However, more still needs to be done to ensure these benefits are fully realized, including broader adoption of Universal Acceptance (UA). ICANN’s North American Stakeholder Engagement team is hosting an important discussion on this topic
at ICANN77 featuring experts from UNESCO and the domain name industry.
Today, not all TLDs are treated equally. A technology as simple as an email address may not work if it belongs to a TLD with more than six characters or is written
in scripts that reflect the diversity of languages used globally. As ICANN prepares for the next round of TLDs it is crucial that these issues are addressed and overcome. Our mission is one world, one Internet.
The
session
[r20.rs6.net] is scheduled on 13 June 2023 at 17:45 UTC at the Marriott Marquis; remote participation will be available.
