Hi Olivier and team

Exactly.. its how the message is delivered.

I love the you tube videos but if you hadn't told me I wouldn't have even known what was there... I had a look at others while I was there too. Some are great but too long. 2 minutes max or people turn off, too much information! Sometimes the information is too drawn out (like the great Clearinghouse information) but perhaps if it was shorter and downloadable then anyone could access the information when they needed it.

I have used "What is ICANN?" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJY5xJKPhjA) during a local presentation. In that context 4 minutes wasn't a big deal.. but I had also printed off some of the frames for discussion after the video.. A resource that started with that video , and then had some short bullet points based on key frames would be useful as a training resource for a workshop.

But there is so much of this valuable info that is being produced that noone knows about and can comment.  (Mind you, did anyone change the At-Large logo that we all complained about in the last ICANN  video they produced? what happened to that?)

But if there was a new Beginners Guide resource that incorporated these types of  short videos, or infographics, posters etc, instead of lots of words on a page (which as you say people just DONT read), then I think understanding (first of all) would be more effectively delivered..

Is there a an advisory group of end-users on the panels that produce these videos? We should use the disability motto "Nothing about us without us"...

The guide is good.. but if its something we want everyone to make sense of we need to explain each section without oral or written language which is the first barrier...

We keep saying that a lot of our potential participants are not comfortable with English and then we give them that booklet.

Actually all of the Beginners Guides are translated in the 5 UN languages. It's actually the main point of the Beginners Guides, that they are translated.

I love those videos where an artist draws a flowchart as a visual to explain a process - no language but the message is clear.
A new online guidebook could consist of a series of flowcharts that introduce and explain each process.
By clicking onto the flowchart you would access the artist's "explanation" of how the process occurs, but no actual voice-over required - so no language barriers..

I fully support this. The problem, in my opinion, is not the language. It's the medium that the message is delivered on. In a world where young people have stopped reading anything else than instant messages, we need to reduce written content to short paragraphs and add audio visual content.

Anyone know a good artist?

ICANN did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kFcxf8KAjg

Also have a look at the explanation of the Trademark Clearinghouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZKzaj5mURo

Hello all,

a response I have received during the consultation process of our Outreach Strategy mentioned a comment I have heard on many occasions: how do ALSes get their members involved in At-Large activity? (see below)

There is a beginner's guide that explains how to participate in At-Large,  but it is more than three years old. https://www.icann.org/resources/files/participating-at-large-2013-11-08-en

And when I read the Guide I can't help wondering why this has not been providing a suitable answer to all the people who have asked me this question. Are we missing the target? How can we rectify this?

Kindest regards,

Olivier

Olivier,

One suggestion I have is to augment the « Task Force on ALS Engagement » section with a mention of the difficulties some ALSes may have in explaining to their members how they are able to participate and helping them to understand the basic At Large structure and dynamics so that their participation becomes easier.

It’s certainly an issue we’ve had in the individual users’ org and I think it would be useful to reflect this in EURALO’s Outreach Plan.

Thanks,
