Thank you for your comments, Barrack. I too can see the value in what AK has suggested, but as you and Glenn have raised, leadership of the ALAC requires skills and knowledge about ICANN and At-Large that have to be acknowledged by the other members of the ALAC who actually do the choosing of their leader, regardless of all the other considerations that have been suggested. Demonstration of these capacities and involvements in what is important to At-Large over a period of time has to have been seen to warrant that selection. RALO leaders should be pushing for potential leaders within their regions to actively shine within their RALOS as well as within the wider At-Large and even ICANN communities. Their credibility and confidence to interact with other SOAC Chairs is an imperative - so they have to know what is going on. It is a big ask, and I have every confidence that Jonathan is the best person for the job at this time. And the selection is made annually if someone else wants to put up their hand. But I can assure you, as Alan, Olivier and Cheryl can attest, it is not an easy job to be defending the end-user perspective in an industry where you are battling against commercial interests. But anyone can try, and best of luck to them. :)

Hi Colleagues,

If i may add my voice. @ABDULKARIM AYOPO OLOYEDE s observation is very right, however i have observed the process it has taken for @Jonathan Zuck to come to where he is and can only say he merits ascending to the Chairpersons role. Maybe we could be a bit more deliberate and intentional in the future to try and achieve Regional balance however in cases where the candidates are volunteers it is worth considering meritocracy. I guess it will be in the interest of the incoming Chair to look into the feasibility of achieving this desire because it will certainly have a major impact in whichever region the candidate is picked from. Otherwise i trust @Maureen Hilyard s judgement in this season. @Jonathan Zuck as you step in please consider raising leaders or a team from the other regions that may not have had an opportunity to serve in the role of Chair so that the concerns can be addressed otherwise this is well deserved and i wish you all the best as you wait to assume the role.

Best Regards

Hi All
I understand's Abdulkarim's perspective and that the ALAC position should show regional representation. I understand the nomination process is open to anyone from any of five regions so its up the ALAC members to nominate someone.  I think diversity and gender balance are very important criteria but also is the skills, experience and ability for leadership.  Any volunteer position at ICANN is a sacrifice but the Chair of ALAC is by far the biggest contribution.  Good luck on all the candidates

Hi All,
I believe Johnathan is an excellent candidate for this job. However I only have some reservations because of the region he is from. I believe there should be some level of fairness and balance when it comes to the selection of ALAC chair. ALAC members primarily represent a region and the reason for this is to make sure everywhere is represented.  Just like we must be sensitive to gender issues we must also  balance positions  regionally. We do that when it comes to most appointments and this should not be an exception.
The previous chair  before Maureen was from the same region as Jonathan therefore I do not believe It should go back to that region at this time. ALAC chair position is a very powerful position and all regions have competent people.

we must carefully think about this and not get emotional.

I like Jonathan and I have nothing against his person but I believe we need to be balance and fair.

I hope we give this a consideration.

My 2cent.

Excellent choice Maureen!
