Dear Alan,
thank you for your follow-up on this matter. It is good to see that, after so much time going around playing cat and mouse and turning in circles, things are actually moving. I can't say that I am 100% pleased because I deplore the fact that so much time was taken to make us lose our time whilst contracts were being signed in the meantime -- which leaves a bitter after-taste. I am also worried in the back of my mind, that this is another way to kick the cork ahead a few more months, years, to keep us running after it.
But let's remain positive! So we're set on a two-pronged track:
- CCT-RT
- PDP on next gTLD rounds
In my opinion, we need to keep the same group of people to support BOTH tracks, otherwise I am pretty sure that the issue will be quietly dropped between the two tracks... as things sometimes are. How are we going to strategize this? Which working group in ALAC will follow this closely and support our representatives in both the Review Team and the PDP Working Group?
- New gTLD Working Group?
- Registration Issues Working Group?
- Newly established Public Interest Working Group?
Looking forward to your kind reply.
Kindest regards,
Olivier

Thanks Olivier, you beat me to it.
You will all recall that at the ALAC-Board meeting in Marrakech, Cherine Chalably had suggested that perhaps instead of forming a new group to inspect the Category 1, SG 1-8 TLDs, that the task could be referred to either or both of the CCT Review Team and the GNSO new gTLD PDP, and he suggested that a phone call be set up the following week to discuss this. That was done and I met with Cherine, Thomas Schneider and James Bladel last week. A summary of that meeting will be distributed shortly, but the letter that Olivier attached was the result.
Although the Board cannot instruct either the RT or the PDP to do anything, the letter does set some expectations. Moreover, I was very please when, on this week's meeting of the GTLD PDP, Jeff, Neuman, one of the co-chairs, presented a brief summary of the issues to be discussed in the PDP< and the issue of such "special" TLDs was covered very well.

Dear Jonathan, Avri, Stephen, and Jeff,
Please find the attached letter from Steve Crocker on behalf of the ICANN Board regarding concerns raised by the ALAC and GAC around the effectiveness of the contracted PICs for the GAC Category 1, Safeguard 1-8 TLDs (“Safeguard PICs”).
