About the Session Theme:
Content moderation on Internet platforms has a long history on the Internet. That history is often neglected,
yet we need to know about it to prepare for the future. With the influx of users to contemporary social media
platforms, which can generate millions of bits of content per minute, content moderation and platform
governance became the hot issue, and so they are under scrutiny by regulators around the world. User-
generated content affects our social and political systems both positively and negatively.
This session explores the current governance mechanisms used for platform governance and their advantages and
disadvantages by looking at the past and peering into the future. The session will also address the competing
pressures on platform content moderation from various stakeholders (Government, Civil Society, and
Platforms) and discuss possible solutions.
