Warm greetings to all. I am pleased to share an important update from Amir Qayyum, Chair of the 2025 ICANN Nominating Committee (NomCom), recently published on the ICANN blog on 12 May 2025.

 

Key Highlights:

• The 2025 NomCom received a total of 106 completed applications for open ICANN and Public Technical Identifiers (PTI) leadership positions.
• The regional and gender distribution of applicants is as follows:
• 37% are from Africa
• 25% are from Asia, Australia, or the Pacific Islands
• 16% are from Latin America or the Caribbean
• 8% are from Europe
• 2% are from North America
• 12% are citizens or residents of two or more regions

• Gender representation among applicants:
• 27% are female
• 73% are male
• The NomCom is currently in the evaluation phase, reviewing candidates for 10 open leadership positions, which include:
• Three (3) members of the ICANN Board of Directors
• One (1) member of the PTI Board of Directors
• Three (3) regional representatives to the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) – one each from:
• the Africa region
• the Asia, Australia, and Pacific Islands region
• the Latin America and Caribbean region
• One (1) member of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) Council
• Two (2) members of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council – one representing the Contracted Parties House and one representing the Non-Contracted Parties House

Current Status and Next Steps:

• The first intersessional meeting was held from 24–26 April 2025, where applications were reviewed and a preliminary shortlist was identified.
• Deep dive groups have been formed to conduct virtual interviews and detailed assessments of shortlisted candidates.
• A second intersessional meeting will be held in May 2025 to finalize the list of candidates.
• Face-to-face interviews for ICANN and PTI Board candidates will be conducted during ICANN83. Meanwhile, the short-listed candidates for the ALAC, ccNSO Council, and the GNSO Council positions will be finalized.
• During ICANN83, NomCom delegates will vote to confirm selections and alternates for the ICANN Board, PTI Board, ALAC, ccNSO Council, and GNSO Council. The NomCom will also launch a due diligence process for the final short-listed candidates for all open leadership positions. The goal is to announce the NomCom selectees in late August or early September 2025. 

This is a significant milestone for ICANN’s multistakeholder model. The global diversity among applicants—particularly the strong representation from all regions—is an encouraging sign of our collective progress toward inclusive governance.
