Dear Members of the Global Encryption Coalition,

Hope this email finds you well.

Earlier this year, Indian Government has introduced the Income Tax Bill 2025. Among the tax reform provisions, the bill also contains serious implications for privacy and a significant threat to encryption in the name of curbing tax evasion. Th Bill authorizes tax officials to access locked physical and digital spaces, including encrypted systems, to search for any undisclosed income.

In light of this, Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) has led the draft of a joint letter to the select committee in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India's Parliament) is currently examining the proposed tax bill.

We welcome and encourage sign-on from your respected organization within the next 10 days. You can sign on the joint letter here.

You can read more about the bill in this explainer. For any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or IFF.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Setu
