I agree...I will miss him too. In the interest of transparency, however, I would like to know more about any non-personal issues that are naturally raised by the sentence, "At the same time, he also requested that his ALS, the Aotearoa Maori Internet Organization, withdraw from the At-Large community." The answer may have something to teach us. If it's simply part of the personal decision, that's fine and certainly respected. -----Original Message-----

Dear All,
Karaitiana earlier today tendered his immediate resignation as Chair of APRALO. In tendering his resignation, Karaitiana asked that APRALO be informed that his "personal circumstances unexpectedly changed so much that [he is] relieving [himself] of many of [his] commitments including APRALO. [His] new work commitments have also been interfering with APRALO over recent months".
He does so with much sorrow and regret. At the same time, he also requested that his ALS, the Aotearoa Maori Internet Organization, withdraw from the At-Large community.
Regarding the process to fill the vacancy made available by Karaitiana's resignation, the APRALO Operating Principles address this circumstance in the following manner: "If a vacancy occurs a replacement for the remainder of the term shall be selected at an extraordinary Meeting" (Part 3. Paragraph 5.5). Therefore, the face-to-face APRALO meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 22 June at 05:00 UTC in Brussels will be designated an Extraordinary Meeting in order to formally select a replacement for the remainder of Karaitiana's term which will run through the 2011 APRALO General Assembly. The resignation of his ALS will also be formally noted during this meeting. This APRALO Extraordinary Meeting, which is scheduled for the normal monthly meeting time of 05:00 UTC, will offer remote participation abilities, including an Adigo phone bridge and an Adobe Connect Chatroom so that all members of APRALO may be able to actively participate in this meeting.
In the weeks prior to this Extraordinary Meeting, Cheryl, as Chair of ALAC, has requested that the two Vice-Chairs, Les and Fouad, decide which one shall serve as temporary chair (or they may decide to serve as co-chairs) until the time the Chair position is formally filled. The temporary chair(s) are also requested to issue a call for elections for a chair to serve the remainder of Karaitiana's term.
Karaitiana had requested that we pass his best wishes to APRALO and notes that he will miss the challenges and meetings.
On behalf of At-Large in ICANN, we warmly thank Karaitiana for his years of service and commitment to APRALO as well as for his participation in At-Large and ICANN.
Kind regards,
Heidi

Dear all, I also like to echo with what others said- we really miss him. And I like to ask Cheryl to convey our great appreciation to him. With my personal thanks, izumi 2010/5/27 Sivasubramanian M <isolatedn@gmail.com>:
Dear CLO
Thank you for the repeated clarification. It is now absolutely clear that these unfortunate developments are due to Karaitiana's personal circumstances.
Thanks

Now let's ALL then NOTE the Following:- (and I "quote" Siva here...

So in my view this exploratory thread of why has ended!...

In the interest of transparency, however, I would like to know more about any non-personal issues that are naturally raised by the sentence,
"At the same time, he also requested that his ALS, the Aotearoa Maori Internet Organization, withdraw from the At-Large community."
The answer may have something to teach us.
If it's simply part of the personal decision, that's fine and certainly respected.
If it is a personal decision entirely unaffected by undesirable regional or wider pressures, I would respect his decision as much. But his resignation appears sudden, it is unexpected, it is combined together with the resignation of his ALS. + Any resignation takes at least a day or two to be considered before it is announced as accepted. In this case the acceptance is also swift and sudden. The discussion on this on this thread is also wrapped up by CLO's message that she has already passed on all our thought and regards and that "he is no longer subscribed to this or other ALAC lists"
It is very possible that Karaitiana's circumstances are personal so not disclosed. But in the absence of clear information, these announcements are prone to be mistaken. Karaitiana Tairu is a pleasant and affable person. Even by mistake this situation shouldn't be read as an involuntary decision. Heidi may please send an emphatic note that this is entirely due to personal circumstances and that Karaitiana's resignation is voluntary.
Sivasubramanian M.
It is all too sudden.

Dear All,
Karaitiana earlier today tendered his immediate resignation as Chair of APRALO.
Kind regards,
Heidi

Cheryl, please don't take the responses the wrong way. Everyone I knew liked Kariatana, both on a personal and professional level. He brought *necessary* insights and perspectives into every forum in which he participated. And he and I delighted in our awkward navigation of the Seoul subway system's airport connection. The concern you see is not morbid curiosity. Nobody likes to see a colleague and friend suddenly withdraw, especially when circumstances don't even allow them to give the goodbye personally; one immediately imagines the worst. The simultaneous withdrawl of Kariatana's ALS only added mystery, along with a professional concern that perhaps something that ICANN or At-Large did precipitated the action. It was in that atmosphere that the replies came. And while I can't speak for those who replied, they wrote what I was thinking. In an atmosphere in which we work so closely, such an -- abrupt -- resignation begs for a better closure. As you've stated, what has now been said offers as much closure as exists. Your details about the issues related to the ALS have been most helpful, and IMO certainly address the professional side of what has happened. On the personal side, I will write to Kariatana myself, and it's his choice whether or how to respond. I agree that the situation is closed, but I certainly understand the response you received. We're only human. No need for all the exclamation marks... - Evan
