Dear AP members, As you have seen in my previous e-mail (updates from our April call) and also from the e-mail from staff, currently The elections for APRALO leaders is open for nomination. You can view the space to see the nominations and eligibility for all. Nominations will be accepted up until 9 May. This is to let you know as well that as part of nomination procedure each current leaders (Chair, Vice-Chair, ALAC Member, NomCom appointee) were asked individually if they are willing to continue and taking into consideration that they all are eligible for re-election, all of them have indicated that they are willing to stand again and are making themselves available for their current positions. So, this will be noted in the wiki space by staff, that all current members indicated that they would like to continue. Meanwhile, all other nominations are welcomed. Best Siranush
Hello, Siranush and APRALO. I wanted to drop a note to say that I think the current leadership team is doing an excellent job. During the April APRALO meeting, which had a full and substantive agenda, I was very pleased to hear the interest among the existing leadership team to mentor and train interested individuals from the region for future leadership roles in ICANN. This is important and extremely valuable as the ICANN context and issues are complex and require time to understand, navigate and intervene successfully. I would encourage the leadership team to share its thinking about plans to support the development of future leaders with the APRALO community. +1 Although I am new and not for re-election, but over the last few months I see the current APRALO LT is indeed doing an excellent job, and would be happy to see them re-elected to their current leadership positions. I believe the election process should be open whereby a call should be send out to all of APRALO membership to see if newer people are interested in the roles available. Given way and giving opportunity to new is also a key aspect of effective and good leadership. I would recommend that the positions be continuously announced on the APRALO list and invite nominations and an election be carried out. Dear Fouad, Thank you for your note. The announcement was sent to all APRALO members, and as it was noted, the positions are open. So, everyone can nominate/self-nominate themselves. My e-mail was stating that current incumbents are ready to serve another term, but nominations are more than welcomed. I think this is the most open and transparent way of opening the pool for nominations. Thanks SiranushAPRALO CHair

Exactly Nadira..and it is why we are opening up for nominations for those who feel they can step up and lead. Hi All, I too support the process, and mentorship approach as suggested by Siranush. This will help groom new leaders. I also wanted to a. discuss if it would be useful to put a cap of number of terms a member is elected to 2 continuous terms, as is the general practice (please pardon my ignorance if this is already in place) b. get member's view on developing the process of putting together list of duties and accomplishments of Chair, Vice Chair etc., anyone who is up for re-election, from their previous term. This will serve multiple purposes: bring more transparency on activities, help people decide better if someone should be re-elected, and will help new members who are contesting and also mentees understand the role and requirements better. Thank you Rahul It is a good idea and is already part of general practice. Candidates should include their achievements in their statement of interest to identify the wide level of commitment that is expected at leadership level - at RALO and ALAC levels. I think that you will be very impressed by all the activities in which our leaders actively engage in on behalf of APRALO and At-Large. I think that you must agree, that for our RALO leader to be given a community award by the CEO truly reflects ICANN's acknowledgement of someone who goes beyond the call of duty to do her job.. and I think you will find that each of the APRALO leaders maintains a high level of involvement across a wide range of At-Large activities regardless of their backgrounds. The leadership team requires members who have that same sense of collaboration and commitment to At-Large. We have had a very busy 2 years or more, but are conjuring up additional time in the day to mentor people through this arduous pathway :) We look forward to seeing who comes through in the end - at the next election round. :) People who want to be apply for the proposed APRALO leaders' mentorship programme need to put their names forward to Siranush and as soon as we finalise our mentorship programme we will notify those who will be assigned to a particular leader mentor. We look forward to hearing more from you all. Regards Maureen On Sun, May 1, 2016 at 10:26 AM, Rahul Sharma (DSCI) <rahul.sharma@dsci.in> wrote:

Dear Maureen, Please correct me if I'm wrong, The mentorship program is already instituted in some of ICANN constituencies. But among the 5 RALOs, APRALO leaders' mentorship proposal is a pioneering program. Which is another + to the commitments of APRALO leadership to their community engagement. If this is the case, it would be good to work with all RALOs to come with *unified *mentorship program. It is a good idea and is already part of general practice.
People who want to be apply for the proposed APRALO leaders' mentorship programme need to put their names forward to Siranush and as soon as we finalise our mentorship programme we will notify those who will be assigned to a particular leader mentor.
We look forward to hearing more from you all.
Regards Maureen

b. get member’s view on developing the process of putting together list of duties and accomplishments of Chair, Vice Chair etc., anyone who is up for re-election, from their previous term. Thank you all for a really good discussion.
Yes, there must be a call for nominations. And absolutely yes, we need volunteers and change. That said, we also need a process - mentorship - so that more people can gain the kind of experience that makes us all effective in the role. So for those who are putting themselves forward - terrific.

It would be great if all the RALOs would look at mentorship programs, but they are a lot of work and not everyone is prepared, or has the time, to put in the effort. Cheryl has been looking after mentees from other RALOs for years, but this is on her own initiative. We have decided that we want to grow leadership capacity within our own RALO for lots of roles across At-Large, but at the same time it has to be a realistic look at what that entails with respect to the workloads that are required. But you don't know until you try. So I hope you have applied to take part, Nadira :) Maureen On Sun, May 1, 2016 at 8:57 PM, Nadira Alaraj <nadira.araj@gmail.com> wrote:

As you have seen in my previous e-mail (updates from our April call) and also from the e-mail from staff, currently The elections for APRALO leaders is open for nomination.

Dear AP members,
As you have seen in my previous e-mail (updates from our April call) and also from the e-mail from staff, currently The elections for APRALO leaders is open for nomination.

Hi All , I support the mentorship approach for future leadership with commitment also agree with general practice which Maureen informed and it would should continue . It is a good idea and is already part of general practice.
People who want to be apply for the proposed APRALO leaders' mentorship programme need to put their names forward to Siranush and as soon as we finalise our mentorship programme we will notify those who will be assigned to a particular leader mentor.
We look forward to hearing more from you all.

Hi All,
I too support the process, and mentorship approach as suggested by Siranush. This will help groom new leaders. I also wanted to
a. discuss if it would be useful to put a cap of number of terms a member is elected to 2 continuous terms, as is the general practice (please pardon my ignorance if this is already in place)
b. get member’s view on developing the process of putting together list of duties and accomplishments of Chair, Vice Chair etc., anyone who is up for re-election, from their previous term. This will serve multiple purposes: bring more transparency on activities, help people decide better if someone should be re-elected, and will help new members who are contesting and also mentees understand the role and requirements better.
Welcome thoughts on this.
