I thought, for the purposes of a conference call, that UTC and GMT were one in the same thing? Keith On 20/05/2012 12:47 a.m., Fouad Bajwa wrote:

Its just meant to be presented as GMT/UTC and may only be a common problem for me. I've never been able to remember UTC ;o) as me being Dyslexic may be a bit over whelming to people around me, it usually is to my family and friends :o) -- Foo On Sun, May 20, 2012 at 5:02 AM, Keith Davidson <keith@internetnz.net.nz> wrote:

I think that Greenwich as part of London goes to daylight saving with the rest of the country so GMT could be confusing. Or perhaps UTC is a consequence of colonial cringe and that is why Greenwich is no longer mentioned - I thought that you may a strong supporter of the Empire when I saw your earlier post . Rule Britannia and all that kind of stuff but alas no. While on the topic I will be an apology for this meeting as it clashes with work commitments. I will endeavour to get another PICISOC rep to attend via teleconference. On 20/05/2012, at 10:24 AM, Fouad Bajwa wrote:

No, GMT does not change when the UK moves into daylight saving time, so currently GMT is 1 hour different to the time in the UK, and this rectifies in winter. GMT was replaced by UTC in the early 1970's as I recall, and it is fairly much a cling to the empire that keeps the concept of GMT alive. There is a small difference in time between GMT and UTC, sometimes a few parts of a second, as "leap" seconds are recorded differently. But whether or not your "clock" is set to UTC or GMT, you will arrive at the right meeting at the right time, all year round if you consider them interchangeable... I think it does not matter much, UTC or GMT, because we use online tools to convert the time to our own zones anyway and there is always a link to let us conveniently check. I just don't want to see more work added for staff so that they can focus on more important things :) Fouad and others, hope you can join our call tomorrow.
