particularly useful could be the joint session today at 16:30 with At-Large and NextGen/Fellows
I hope it will be well attended

Hi Roberto and all,

glad to see this thread unfolding. Getting more young end users
involved at ICANN is indeed proving forever more challenging, thank
you all for all your efforts in trying to attend to this issue. Would
it make sense to bring this theme to the foreground of our At-Large
discussions in Seattle or beyond, and suggest a productive and
actionable way forward? One that goes beyond SIGs and the NextGen
programme - a strategic plan that we can get our ALSes to work on?

Would love to brainstorm with you on these,

Thanks and best,

Glenn,

Never say never.

I said three times: “This is my last ICANN meeting”. In Berlin 1999, in Seul 2009, in Kobe 2019.

We’ll find some time to chat this week.

Dear all,

After this message there were a couple of other contributions mostly by private messages.
However, since the issue raised by Glenn is important, and may be discussed in more detail in Seattle, and even among the people more involved in the NextGen program, let me paste here some considerations that can be useful for a discussion involving all of us, as it has to do with what we exactly want from the NextGenners

When I started this thread I thought that I was just giving a bit of information and an encouragement to participate to the NextGen presentations sessions.

It turns out that there are several good points that provoke further thoughts. I start from the detail to close with the helicopter view.

First point, the schedule is such that participation to the presentations is difficult because of conflicting schedule with other important topics. Fair enough. But we must note that the reverse is also true, that NextGenners are prevented from attending important sessions taking place at the same time. In particular, I note the At-Large Plenary https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ficann82.sched.com%2Fevent%2F1vpZw%2Fat-large-plenary-1-core-internet-values-evolution-and-challenges-for-icann&data=05%7C02%7C%7C24b3fb73112b473a9b5a08dd5e76a639%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638770585866250690%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=f95FO91qmnR9TXrGF3W0Jw83ms2z6XjSRHLc8tS130A%3D&reserved=0, that would be something of the paramount interest to newcomers but also an excellent opportunity for “oldcomers” to hear from newcomers their view on the Internet and its core values.

The schedule reflects the (perceived) importance of the events. Obviously two “top hit” events would never be placed at the same time. There must be a way to increase the (perceived) importance of the NextGen presentations to favour a better placement in the schedule. Incidentally, I note that while a recording is always available, people who do not have the chance, because of conflicting sessions, to attend the presentations will miss what is an important part: the opportunity to ask questions and to make an immediate contact with the speaker, possibly with a follow up in the rest of the week, because in most cases the recordings will be looked at only at the end of the conference, once back home.

BTW, I am encouraging my mentees to join the NARALO Town Hall, so that some communication could be established with what would be their natural “port of entry” in the NA ICANN community: the “At-Large”, as the name suggests. Then they can move to a more specific stakeholder group, depending on their specific interests.

A second point is about the content of the presentations being in line with the ICANN scope and priorities. Besides the fact that we have just the titles and not the content, so it is probably premature to pass judgement, I honestly cannot see which would be the three presentations that could be considered out of scope.

This said, I have a few considerations in reply to this. The first one is that the instructions given were to talk about something that they know and they care about, knowing what the scope of ICANN is (they have attended all the compulsory ICANN Learn training courses, so they have a good - albeit theoretical - understanding of ICANN). I cannot speak for other mentors, but in discussions with my mentees I have alway made clear what the ICANN remit is but have also not discouraged them to add facts or considerations that were important to them.

However, what strikes me most in the list of titles is not that there may be a couple of ones that could be perceived out of ICANN’s scope, but that there is only one title out of twelve that mentions gTLDs. In short, not the presence of unusual items, but the absence of “the topic”, on which we incumbents spend actually the greater part of our efforts. And this brings me straight into the final consideration.

True, things are radically changing. They have been always on the move, but this beginning of 2025 will probably witness a paradigm change. Yes, "Blood will be spilled and we need to be strategic […]”. That needs to bring us back to the founding principles: why did we create ICANN, what was the objective, what have we done so far and what remains to be done - or must be changed. In this situation the last thing that I would do, having the opportunity to have young enthusiast newcomers, at their first contact with ICANN, telling us something that may be different from repeating time and again the same old stories, is to straightjacket them into a sandbox.

Let’s let them speak up, and tell us what is important for them in what they see as the ICANN remit, and then judge what is in scope and what out of scope, but after a discussion within us. This is their first experience, they will decide whether in ICANN there is too much talking about things they do not care about and leave, or decide that they can have a role in it, and continue. And we all will benefit from new ideas.

As people have heard me saying often, the NextGen programme is surely an opportunity for participants, but is also - and for me foremost - an opportunity to have a fresh view and to hear what people outside the ICANN circles think and feel. This has been always important, but now that we are living through an epochal change, it has become necessary.

The key question is "what is really ICANN for?”. Is it just about regulating the domain name market or about establishing a multistakeholder governance model for the Internet of which the management of domain names is just an example?

Looking forward to a meeting in Seattle that is happening in interesting times, where I fear we may appreciate to which extent the new approach to geopolitics is changing the paradigm.

Hi All
Although all the topics are interesting they are some that is out of scope box ICANN, this is a problem for the Fellowship and NExgen which is detached for the core mission. Each of these presentations should be mapped to Icann policies, SO and AC activities. We have people getting a glimpse but not a real picture. It's not valuable to most and a disservice and anthems to the goals of efficiency and the strategic plans.

Dear all,

With the permission of the NextGen coordinator, who reads in copy, may I send you the schedule of the NextGen presentations that will take place Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 March at ICANN82.

This will be a good opportunity for hearing what their view is on the different topics, as they will bring a fresh look to old problems.

I hope that we will have a good attendance to these sessions.

Best regards,
