ICANN Board Vice-Chair - Former ALAC Member
With all the talk recently about our Board member Leon Sanchez, being selected as Vice-Chair, I wanted to remind everyone that this is not the first time that an ex-ALAC member has been so honoured. It is worth remembering that Roberto Gaetano was an ALAC Member for 4 years, from 2003-2006, and was our first Liaison to the ICANN Board for the entire period. In December, 2006 Roberto was appointed as a full voting Board member by the NomCom, and was immediately elected Vice-Chair, a position that he held for the duration of his term. There are times when people leave the Board and sort of disappear. That was not the case with Roberto, who is still one of At-Large's most active members. And as many of you know, he plays a pretty mean saxophone with the GEMS Band. Here's to Roberto! Alan
Hi Alan, Indeed Roberto's commitment has been solid. He continues to be a great At Large Ambassador. Regards On Fri, 22 Nov 2019, 5:56 am Alan Greenberg, <alan.greenberg@mcgill.ca> wrote:

+1 and kudos to former Board Vice-Chair Roberto for his continued involvement and support for our policy work in At-Large. Thank you Alan for acknowledging this. Maureen On Thu, 21 Nov 2019, 6:14 PM Barrack Otieno, <otieno.barrack@gmail.com> wrote:

First of all, I am a bit embarrassed about Alan’s praise of my continuing being active once off the Board. Besides that I have been in the loop again also because of my tenure as PIR Board, I am now just an individual Internet user, and my participation to ALAC is simply because this is the best way I can defend my own positions and interests in the net. About the ALAC Liaison, I have been the first ALAC Liaison, from 2003 until the end of my second term as NomCom-appointed ALAC, in 2006, when I left the Board just to step in again as NomCom-appointed voting Board member. Vittorio, one of the former ALAC Chairs, replaced me as Liaison in 2006. Cheers, Roberto

Hi Alan,
this is not 100 percent correct. The first official ALAC Liaison was Vittorio Bertola (until 2007), followed by Wendy Selzer (2007 - 2009) amd Vanda (2009 - 2010) before Sebastian became the first voting ALAC Board member (2010 - 2014). Roberto was selectd by the NomCom (I was a member of NomCom it this time). There had been some other individuals close to At Large who made their way into the board vie tha NomCom as Susan Crawford and Bertrand de la Chapelle, but - as said in a previous mail - the NomCom did partly forget that the orginal plan for the establishment of the NomCom was to open a venue for individuals, close to the At Large philosophy.

Alan's praise was fully justified. Your continuing presence has been a great asset and offered a level of continuity that many other groups lack. As for: "*the best way I can defend my own positions and interests in the net*"
I am torn about this. I have pulled back from ALAC because I have found that participation is too inefficient. That is, the amount of good done per hour spent is just too low for me. The time investment to be merely competent in ICANN issues, given the current structure, is way too high. I also find the ALAC ratio of process to policy -- as a proportion of collective effort and time -- to be seriously abnormal. The volume of self-made bureaucracy is just staggering to me and a clear obstacle to involvement. I've also been involved in ISOC (which also has difficulties defining its own community) as well as IETF (though I'm not tech inclined enough to be effective there). But after all the dust has settled, I've retrenched into domestic volunteerism, and will work to influence Canada's positions on Internet policy and at the ITU through local consumer advocacy. That is -- at least for now -- where I think my time is best spent making the Internet better for everyone. Meanwhile, I stick around here and ISOC (virtually) hoping that one day they will come to their senses and actually want to serve their mandates and stakeholders. Everyone's mileage will vary. - Evan
As Roberto has confirmed, he was appointed to the ALAC by the NomCom for two terms (2003-2006), but he was also selected by the ALAC to represent the ALAC on the Board (there is no prohibition on occupying both roles simultaneously, GAC and SSAC Liaisons do it all the time). Vittorio served a one year term as Liaison to the Board for 2006-2007 followed by Wendy and Vanda as you described. You can find a list of 2003 Board members with Roberto as ALAC Liaision at http://web.archive.org/web/20031215084615/http://www.icann.org/general/board... .
