Expression of appreciation and thanks for the arrangement made by ICANN for ICANN meetings
Dear Goran and Maarten, I would like to send my personal & community appreciation and thanks to ICANN Org and the Board for the arrangements made in relation to health and safety for participants in ICANN meetings.. I have had a surgical operation done after my tibia was fractured more than two months ago and have been accessed fit to travel by the doctors in Mauritius. I am at KL Conference Centre attending ICANN75. Yesterday, my left foot was swollen and I could hardly walk as it was paining too much. I went to the health and safety office, setup for the purpose at ICANN75. I was attended by a paramedic officer named Michael Watson of Gaboon. I would say that I am really thrilled by the service provided by this gentleman. He consulted me and advised that I should be sent to the hospital for investigation . He called the Prince Court Medical Centre as well an International SOS insurance company. His approach was so professional that he took care of the travel from the conference centre to the medical centre, talked to the doctor and liaised with the insurance company. He even took the medicines from the pharmacy. While I was still at the hospital, he got another patient from ICANN75 and did the same follow up for him. After the consultation, investigation and medication from the medical centre, the gentleman called the transport and we returned to the hotel at around 09:30 PM. I was not aware that ICANN has made such an arrangement to ensure the health and safety of the participants until my experience of yesterday. This really ease the lives of participants. Thank you very much. With kind regards Dave Kissoondoyal ALAC Member

Dear Dave, Sorry to hear what you went through but happy that ICANN has been able to take good care of you. As we have always said, health and safety of community, staff and board is at the very top of our priorities and this experience you had is witness to how much effort Org puts into making this a reality. Thanks for your words and I wish you the very best, León

Leon, as additional data points, Cheryl will remember how we tended for an ill participant in the ICANN meeting in Mexico City in 2009 (her knowledge as nurse and her selflessness in aid of a comrade were peerless and key to the success of this intervention), and going even further back in history I recall assistance to a community member who broke an arm in a football (soccer) game, at a time when such were held between, as far as I can remember, between say the GAC and other communities. Too bad that the liabilities may have influenced losing that community-building opportunity, and glad to see that health and safety considerations are so deeply embedded. Remind this to people who ask why meetings cost what they cost - insurance at this level does not come cheap. Good combination of community-mindedness and business savvy, Maarten, Göran, all others involved. This just touched a memory: I was on the board of directors of a group having a conference in Atlanta. Someone found me in the hall and rushed me into a meeting room. A participant had died. I don't know if ICANN has policies and procedures for this but it's perhaps worth giving it a thought before it happens. It wasn't a lot of fun making up procedure on the spot though all went well enough I suppose. Some issues are authorities to contact, immediate handling of the deceased such as get a blanket or similar to cover, never move or touch the body or belongings unless absolutely necessary nor let anyone else other than appropriate authorities, "rope it off", people will try to be "helpful", what about CPR or similar? You may not really know the person is dead right away, I wasn't certain. Whom to contact immediately including friends and/or family (how?), others in the organization and conference facilities (who?), dismiss everyone from the hall immediately?, public announcements? (people will see the commotion), receive authorities (meet them outside? wait with the body? who?), who signs whatever they need, take photographs?, contact legal?, etc. Admittedly that's off the top of my head and no doubt incomplete but from some experience. -- -Barry Shein Software Tool & Die | bzs@TheWorld.com | http://www.TheWorld.com Purveyors to the Trade | Voice: +1 617-STD-WRLD | 800-THE-WRLD The World: Since 1989 | A Public Information Utility | *oo*
Thank you Dave. It is great when someone actually acknowledges something nice that happens during ICANN meetings. Im particularly thrilled to hear this because I'm always pushing a barrow about volunteers feeling that they are being looked after. This is acknowledgement that they are, and Im pleased that you let Goran know too. Regards Maureen On Mon, Sep 19, 2022 at 2:24 PM Goran Marby via At-Large < at-large@atlarge-lists.icann.org> wrote:

Dave, just adding my voice here in apprecation of the efforts Health and Safety make, it's more than just ICANN providing 'a service' theybare provifing effective access to a top class service, but such tjings often stay under the radar, so having your vote of thanks 🙏 on this is in my view valuable I trust that ICANN will ensure those who provided your supprt and service know how much you appreciate it...
