"The money is being held in a non-interest-bearing account, partly due to ICANN’s insistence that the program is not an exercise in self-enrichment." To be fair, if they HAD used an interest bearing account, they would have a PR nightmare to deal with. -- Cheers, McTim "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. Hmmm ... a prudent investment in low risk, low interest accounts would have been appropriate. There are plenty of ways to spend responsibly any resulting surplus. (e.g. outreach, SARP, fellowships etc.) Regards CW On 03 Nov 2012, at 01:21, McTim wrote:

ICANN thought they did that when they lost the $5M. Like I said, they appear to have learned their lesson. The two accounts that Bill suggested are good for $250K apiece. That still leaves $351.5M to place. Any suggestions? I am no great fan of ICANN, but in an environment where interest rates are at 0.1%, the amount of interest they are forgoing is insignificant relative to the overall amounts involved, and any alleged plan to earn some interest generally brings more risk (often not apparent to the person proposing it) than reward. Dear John, 351.5M with zero interest earnings, after a year or two, will not buy what 351.5M buys today. An investment plan for the short and medium term is required. ICANN could come up with a safe and conservative plan. Sent from Turiya MID http://turiya.mobi On Nov 3, 2012 6:01 PM, "John R. Levine" <johnl@iecc.com> wrote:

Like what? The only investments I know that are suitable for such a large amount of money with negligible risk are treasury bills which currently pay 0.15%, close to nothing. If you are aware of suitable investments that pay more, what are they? If you're not, what's your point? Also remember that this money is all supposed to be spent in short order, as ICANN processes the applications. If they still have a big chunk of it a year from now, refunds will be in order, not investments. R's, John
