Draft [UK] Data Communications Surveillance Bill
That's right. Not Iran. Not N. Korea. Not China. And definitely neither Hugo or Fidel! Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Home Department yesterday presented to the British Parliament a draft bill that maps out the mother of all electronic eavesdropping program ever from the government of a 'free' people. If this bill passes as presented, the British government intends to co-opt and compel all telecommunications providers to log and retain every little detail about the online life of all of Her Majesty's loyal subjects; every web visit, email, phone call and text message, [Blackberry] bbms and Skype chats not excepted. This plan as defined goes production, it means even 'foreign' providers shall be ensnared and subject to UK law. Or, face the consequences. BTW, officialdom insists that this surveillance will redline and ring fence 'content'. Their interest is just metadata; sender/receiver info, origin/destination IP addresses, phone numbers, that kind of thing. No deep packet inspection, no parsing of the payload. None a that, wink wink. Oh. If - so says the top law enforcer! - you're worried about all this why, you have to be a common criminal or conspiracy theorist.
