ICANN has just posted a series of new webpages to describe the "Empowered Community” mechanisms that we (the community) created during the IANA transition. 

This Empowered Community includes the GNSO, and has powers to:
block ICANN bylaws, 
approve fundamental bylaws, 
block ICANN budgets, 
challenge ICANN for actions/inactions in violation of the Bylaws, and
remove one or all ICANN directors.

No need to do anything now, but these pages are a good resource to understand how we “the community” holds the ICANN corporation accountable.

We wish to inform you that, as discussed at the first Empowered Community Administration meeting in Copenhagen, ICANN has launched the initial set of web pages that describe the Empowered Community and the Empowered Community Administration, as well as a Correspondence page to house all correspondence and notifications sent to and by the Empowered Community Administration: https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2017-05-25-en[icann.org]. 

 

We hope that you and your community groups will find these web pages helpful. We will continue to build out and update these and other informational web pages for each exercise by the Empowered Community of any of its powers under the ICANN Bylaws. You may wish to note that the first update, in respect of the Empowered Community’s Approval Action concerning the proposed Fundamental Bylaw amendment, has already been made:https://www.icann.org/en/ec/proposed-fundamentals-bylaws-changes-move-gov-committee[icann.org].

 

In preparation for the upcoming Community Forum at ICANN59 in Johannesburg, ICANN staff will work with you to set up a conference call shortly to discuss logistical and other organizational matters concerning the Empowered Community Administration’s moderation and management of the forum.
