Thanks Ron and Jim

Here are my quick notes from the Universal Acceptance of TLD  presentation

Issues

Website forms doing improper email domain checks.

Google adwords not accepting .asia etc

MS Mobile IE not supporting IDN.

Hosting control panels not support arabic IDN's

Social network Twitter and facebook no support of IDN

Browser redirects to search mode if does not recognise TLD

Poor code on developer website in respect to this often top in Google.

"Email this article" from a website not working.

Suggested Solutions

ICANN coordingate  activity.

ICANN approach big software developers eg MS

ICANN make presentations at application layer events or provide material

Use new gTLD publicity materials to raise awareness.

Info more accessible on ICANN website

Report non support or non acceptance.

Value to business of accepting new TLD's and IDN

Promote via GAC

Competitions etc to promote

Registry and Registrar software should support IDN.(ICANN can insist on this)

Funding for outreach for this issue, and materials

Repository of info on the subject

If product it does not work - send it back.

Make marketing people aware or problem not just technical people.

I will work BC comment on JIG initial report on Universal Acceptance of IDN which is a subset of the general isse.

Key takeaway  for BC

There is a value to business of the acceptance of new TLD's and IDN.  All issues mentioned above can result in lost business.

Asunto: RE: [bc-gnso] TLD Universal Acceptance

Universal acceptance is not just the ability to resolve DNS queries TO individual TLDs with more than three letter TLDs, but it also implies ability to send an email with a TLD address with more than three letters.  Universal Acceptance of TLDs on the ICANN website (http://www.icann.org/en/news/in-focus/tld-acceptance) states “Most software should not need to test whether a domain name is valid. The act of connecting to a domain name (in the case of a URL, for example), or sending an email (in the case of an email address) will automatically provide mechanisms of informing if the domain name is valid or not. “ The issue is email address with a .NAME TLD is being rejected by many entities.  That is a universal acceptance issue, in my view.

Hope this helps,

Ron,

I appears to me that your example of .NAME SLDs not being universally accepted as IDs for e-commerce sites is not directly related to the “Universal Acceptance” topic.

Universal acceptance is the ability to resolve DNS queries TO individual TLDs, e.g., the early (or even ongoing) problems in reaching .TRAVEL because it is more than three characters or not in some software lists of valid TLDs.  Being able to resolve the IP address of a .NAME URI is not related to the unwillingness of Apple or BBC to accept a .NAME registration as valid user identification credentials.

Chris,

Regarding the session on Universal Acceptance, my business partner has had some unhappy experiences with .NAME – after all these years!

.NAME is not accepted by Apple for an ID (for iTunes, or any Apple device), British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Sears, New York Department of Education, among many others.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

BC members,

As mentioned  in the meeting just now  there is a panel tomorrow (and a public forum closing on the 23rd March).

The panel is at 12.30 on Wednesday in “La Paz A”  entitled: TLD Universal Acceptance

Universal Acceptance of All Domains has been an on-going effort driven by ICANN. In the past this project's focus was on raising awareness that software vendors and other parties needed to make sure they accepted domains from new gTLDs that were introduced in previous rounds in 2000 and 2004. This scope has since expanded to include IDN ccTLDs, and since the ICANN Board of Directors approved the new gTLD program last year, many more new TLDs are expected to be added to the root zone in the near future. The main goal of this project is to raise awareness in the community and discuss the best ways of addressing these issues. In order to help the project achieve these goals, we are seeking to engage with the community on the best ways to identify and address the issues involved. We are inviting experts, like yourself, to take part in this active discussion so you can share your opinion on what you think could and should be done in order to promote further universal acceptance of all domains.

We would like to allow invitees to share their experiences and opinions, as well as answer the following questions:

1. What are the existing issues with acceptance of domains registered within TLDs?

2. Who should be addressing the existing issues, for example, registry operators, registrars, ISPs, software vendors, software developers, others?

3. How can ICANN promote universal acceptance of all domains effectively?

The public comment forum that   Initial Report on Universal Acceptance of IDN TLDs

and the initial report found here

Any help or thoughts on TLD Universal Acceptance   for tomorrow  gratefully received.

Best
