Announcement: Change in June meeting location: Middle East Developments Cause Cancellation of ICANN Jordan Meeting
Dear BC Members: http://blog.icann.org/2011/02/middle-east-developments-interfere-with-icann-... ICANN announced that the June meeting will not take place in Jordan. A formal announcement of location will be made soon. I am aware that at least two BC members have already purchased tickets to Jordan. That is regrettable, and I do hope that they are refundable tickets. Please stay tuned for the formal announcement of the new location of the June meeting. I realize that travel to Asia is challenging as well to many BC members, due to cost and time to travel.I am told that it is likely that the meeting will be in Asia. Marilyn CadeBC Chair
a couple of thoughts… i know that most of you already know this, but "non-refundable" tickets are often refundable -- there's just a rebooking charge. when i cancelled my trip to Nairobi, i think i got all but $150 back from Expedia in the form of a credit that i had to use up within a year. speaking of Nairobi. i participated remotely in that meeting and i have to say that the experience was great. looking at the $2100 ticket cost to Singapore (the leading candidate in the rumor mill at the moment) i'd like to lobby for a US-based remote-participation option. i love you folks, but 48 hours of plane rides and $2100 to see your faces is pretty steep. mikey On Feb 20, 2011, at 7:00 AM, Marilyn Cade wrote:

Thanks Mikey, I would like to campaign for a Amman, Jordan remote satélite meeting option. I am flying Easyjet from London so rebooking is not an option for me unless the relocation is Europe. May I suggest we do a remote participation for the BC in San Francisco area? We can invite Silicon Valley firms, etc. I'm just sick about how much a Singapore conference will cost members - especially after the numerous gTLD delays which have cost numerous people in the ICANN community significant time and resources. Just a thought. Thanks, Chuck.that could be an excellent approach. There are several BC members in the San Francisco area, for instance, I think that Fred Felman suggested they could host 17-20 folks in S.F. area. If we were to decide to do that, we should identify a few 'needed resources' for a really effective remote 'hub'. The IGF does remote hubs, so there is a 'body' of expertise we should consider, if the If it is to work well, people should stay at a single hotel/or one or two, so that they actually have their own 'mini meeting' and exchanges. We would ask ICANN for full remote participation support. It is best to do this in a dedicated room, that can stay assigned to the meeting for whatever period of time that the participants are committed to participate.Participating in a remote hub is different from participating alone, from your office or home laptop, since it generally involves having a community around you. We have a significant number of members on the West Coast, as on the East Coast, USA, and also, between the IPC and BC, a good number in Europe as well. IF ICANN was to organize remote hubs, it could be that they would fund the hotel meeting room(w), and have staff on site to support and participate. If the BCorganizes our own or partners with IPC/ISPCP, or others,, we would need to have a facility that can stay open during the relevant hours for the ICANN meeting. During Kenya, the Registries and Regisrars decided to rent a hotel room in Reston Virginia, and have a large screen, etc. for 'attending' certain ICANN sessions> I'd like to propose that we stay tuned for whether it is announced to be Singapore, for instance, and consider whether the BC members who do not travelwould want to do a remote hub, or whether ICANN itself might organize one or two remote hubs that people can use. but, this is a good suggestion to keep in mind, Chuck, and plan accordingly.
