ICANN Fellowship Program The Fellowship Program[icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_en_about_...> seeks out individuals who are interested in, or already engaged in, the various aspects of ICANN's work in policymaking, the operation of the Domain Name System, and the security and stability of the global Internet. The goal of the program is to help create a more diverse and a broader base of knowledgeable constituents who can engage in the ICANN multistakeholder process and become the new voices of experience in their regions and on the global stage. Since its creation in 2007, the Fellowship Program has built a strong group of individuals who are actively participating in ICANN communities and in other Internet governance entities within the Internet ecosystem. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
Just to reinforce that we should be encouraging applications for fellowships from business. Omar and I did an analysis of the last 18 Fellowship appointees. I did a similar analysis a few years ago, when I was BC chair, and Chris and I created the call to action to give us more funding as we are always disadvantaged in the selection of business candidates. BUT, we need to continue to encourage applicants from business from developing countries, as the support from ICANN resources is helpful, as some who have been through the Fellowship program do get travel funding and get also well briefed on the work of ICANN, broadly. BUT the analysis that Omar and I just did shows that we are not really getting qualified business candidates via the present process. I am hearing from the contracted parties that they feel the same challenges. I did a 'rough' count and it seems that 12 or so are from CS, and 13 or so from Academia, and ... the fact that most of those identified as business are not really business opportunities as we would define ... Indeed, many of those those who say they are business are sometimes identifying with At Large. I find that challenging as At Large is about individual users. Yet, we seem to have some confusion about this and if there are businesses that chose At Large, we should be asking why that is happening.
