CCWP-HR Research: Call for volunteers (reply by 8th April) + Call Update
Hi everyone, We had the first call for the CCWP-HR Research Sub Group on the 4th of April. It was a productive call, where we decided how to go ahead with our work and mandate. The aim of this sub group is two fold. The first is visualizing, mapping and documenting cases in which ICANN is, and potentially will, impact human rights. The second is creating awareness about the various ways in which ICANN is impacting human rights. As one can imagine, this is a complicated task and so the group decided it was best if we begin by looking at the following areas as they are of the highest priority as of now. This sub group will focus on providing research that raises awareness and breaks down the human rights impact of ICANN. The priority areas as of now, with present volunteers are: 1. Visualizing and developing the table prepared for the Marrakech meeting (attached) : Niels, Marillia 2. PDP new gTLD Subsequent Procedures : http://gnso.icann.org/en/group-activities/active/new-gtld-subsequent-procedu... 3. WHOIS PDP 4. New gTLDs (focussing on angles of freedom of expression, economic aspects) : Gangesh, Marillia In case you would like to work on a specific issue that is not listed above, you are more than welcome to do so :) Please indicate what specific area you will be looking into as that would help with coordinating tasks within the group. I'd encourage all those interested in human rights work at ICANN to get involved by volunteering to work on one of the focus areas mentioned above. We will divide micro tasks within each area so there is a clear understanding of responsibilities and timelines. Please respond to this email by the 8th of April. The next Sub Group Call in on the 29th of April and we are hoping to have preliminary findings circulated between groups by the 20th. In case of any further questions or clarifications, please feel free to get in touch with me. Best wishes, Vidushi

Dear all; Due to current situation in my country Burundi, I am in conditions which do not allow me to make conveniently my contributions since last April 2015. Briefly, I have fled the country between April and June last year. I returned back end of June 2015 expecting that my storm was over. I spent just a month in Burundi and I fled again for several times up and down. Last time as I have been keen informing you that I shall meet you in ICANN-55 Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco ; by surprise I was arrested home by the National Police and the Presidential Police on 03.03.2016. One of my colleagues have sold me to the Police in order to replace me in the GAC and in all other Representations I am replresenting my country in the region. The reason even why I failed at the very last minute to attend Marrakech. I was released on 10.03.2016 and they have paid some amount of money to shoot me once I am out and the Almighty God has saved me. Briefly, this is my story and right now I am in a safe place hidden. Remember that I am not Politician and I do not belong to any kind of political matter. During the time I have spent in Spent in special police station (Documentation) I was accused so many things related to politics. I am really under chock now. Coppens BurundiX ASBL.

Hi everyone,
We had the first call for the CCWP-HR Research Sub Group on the 4th of April. It was a productive call, where we decided how to go ahead with our work and mandate.

3. WHOIS PDP 4. New gTLDs (focussing on angles of freedom of expression, economic aspects) : Gangesh, Marillia
In case you would like to work on a specific issue that is not listed above, you are more than welcome to do so :) Please indicate what specific area you will be looking into as that would help with coordinating tasks within the group.

Thank you to everyone for your comments. It appears I forgot to attach the table to the previous mail, but I have attached it to this email :) Rafik, the Subsequent Procedures PDP is a specific focus area, and depending on the number of volunteers we get we will be deciding whether the new gTLD work can focus on other aspects (economic, freedom of expression) as well. Look forward to hearing from you all, Vidushi ----- On Apr 7, 2016, at 6:49 AM, Rafik Dammak <rafik.dammak@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, I'm a little confused about the division between groups. I thought the research subgroup will be working on topics that aren't bound by any ongoing policy process or timeline, in order to give the group more research freedom. Wouldn't topics 3 and 4 be dealt with by the PDP subgroup? If not, what will the PDP subgroup be doing? Dear Aarti, Thanks for your question. The aim of this group is in two parts : 1. to create awareness about the various ways in which ICANN is impacting human rights, and 2. to visualise, document and map cases for the same. We are therefore, trying to raise awareness on how these priority areas connect with human rights and will produce fundamental research on these topics first, and in addition to that we are also looking to provide in depth research to other sub groups on urgent PDPs. As discussed during our working session as well, human rights are indivisible, and so to exclude any work might be difficult. I hope this answers your question. Dear Vidushi, Thanks for your reply. I'm interested in working on WHOIS PDP. However, being part of SG3- PDP subgroup as well, I remain confused about what exactly that group will do if we are working on the PDP here. I understand the indivisibility of HRs argument, but I think we need to clarify the scope of work to ensure equitable distribution of work between the subgroups, and to avoid overlap. Apologies if this was discussed in detail during the last call. I wasn't able to attend but did go through the transcripts- I could be missing something though. Hi Aarti, Thanks for this. I understand the confusion in terms of topics, let me try to address this by looking at the task of the subgroups: Subgroup 1 - Research Focus on research understanding how ICANNs policies and operations can impact human rights, and make this more visible. This includes PDPs, but can also be other work. SG 2 - WS2 Focuses on the human rights impacts in WS 2 SG 3- PDP Focuses on ongoing PDP processes Of course if SG1 does research on PDP processes this can support the work in the PDPs and SG3, but the aim of SG1 is too think more fundamentally about issues whereas SG3 tries to directly liaise, support and follow ongoing PDPs, also to ensure that there is no duplication of efforts and we have one place (namely CCWP) where we can track all relevant human rights topics in ICANN. I hope this explanation helps. Hi everyone,
We had the first call for the CCWP-HR Research Sub Group on the 4th of April. It was a productive call, where we decided how to go ahead with our work and mandate.
The priority areas as of now, with present volunteers are:
1. Visualizing and developing the table prepared for the Marrakech meeting (attached) : Niels, Marillia 2. PDP new gTLD Subsequent Procedures : http://gnso.icann.org/en/group-activities/active/new-gtld-subsequent-procedu... 3. WHOIS PDP 4.
Best wishes,
