Dear all,

As I said during the call, I wasn’t aware of (or never though about) the workload that the dinners put on the secretariat, nor did I know that the dinners caused negative sentiments in the community by having a higher demand than capacity. And when we add the incredible costs of a dinner, it is clear that we have to try something else.

I would have hoped that we could stick to a dinner (as they are so popular), but change the approach, e.g. by charging for a ticket (will limit the number of attendees, solve the sponsor problem and possibly reduce negative sentiments) and asking the host to organize (will take the load of the secretariat).

However, as a large majority is in favor of trying the proposed “cocktail alternative”, I will jump in line J

Cheers,

Roelof Meijer

Subject: Re: [ccnso-council] Item to discuss: Future of ccNSO Dinners

Thanks Gabi for the paper.

I have now been able to listen to the call recording and was not surprised to hear the level of interest in this item!

From both the paper and the call, I understand that the popularity of the dinners has resulted in problems and we currently have a 'problem statement' that covers three problems:

  1. The administration of the ccNSO dinner is becoming increasingly time consuming and problematic for our Secretariat
  2. The cost of the dinners has now risen to a level that makes it challenging to find sufficient sponsorship
  3. We cannot currently accommodate everyone who would like to come to the dinners and people become frustrated and/or disappointed

Perhaps as a starting point for our discussion, it would be helpful to know if there are any other problems that we have missed?

Assuming we can agree on what problems we are trying to solve, the next challenge will be to consider solutions. On the call, I heard solutions being proposed that would address some, but not all of the problems, such as asking attendees to pay for some of the costs, asking the local hosts to organise.

Its always quite difficult to have a debate on this kind of topic via an email list, but at the very least I suggest that we use the list to gather some suggestions on options that we can bring together in a paper for our next Council call.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome…..

Kind regards,

Lesley

Subject: [ccnso-council] Item to discuss: Future of ccNSO Dinners

Dear Councillors,

The issue of the Future of the ccNSO Dinners caused quite a debate at today's call, so it was decided to once again forward the document on this subject to the Council list and to discuss it online. We can then bring it up again at next Council call.

Please, read the document and share your thoughts on this email list!

Kind regards,

Gabi
