I don't know if my previous response was clear, so I'm adding this info.

.kr is involved in activity that can be termed "redirecting" but in a strict sense it is not wildcarding because the only purpose of the redirection is to enable the IDN.kr users with Internet Explorer version 6 to be able to resolve their IDN.kr query. All others produce a "domain does not exist" response.

That is, queries on non-existant domains are redirected only to filter out the IDN.kr query that is not in the form of PUNYCODE so that they may be correctly resolved. Even though the other non-existant domain queries are redirected at first, once the IDN.kr is filtered out, all others produce a "page not found" response.

If you try Kim's imaginary address with .kr, you can see that it returnes a "page not found" response.

http://ieurhfqihfqibcqirbcqirvqe.kr/

Again, .kr is currently trying to figure out a way of dealing with this at the BIND level .

Hi Bart,

You can use DNS tools to query for "*.cm" and see what kind of response is returned. My tool just issues a query like that for each of the TLDs.

A poor mans way to do it is simply to go to a web browser and type in some improbable address like http://ieurhfqihfqibcqirbcqirvqe.cm. In TLDs with wildcards that will return a response, for example in .ws: http://ieurhfqihfqibcqirbcqirvqe.ws

Note that such inspection is not perfect. It tests for classical wildcards that should match for anything. It would not detect synthesis that is selective - for example, a registry could theoretically synthesise responses only to domains that it thinks are mis-spelled and provide a suggestion on where to go. There is no programmatic way to determine if that happens.

Hi Kim,
This is latest ON .CM according to Paulos. Can you indicate how you verify it, if there is no problem making it public, please send it to the Council list directly and me.
Thanks, kind regards,

Bart

Chris Disspain,
ccNSO Council,

As you can see here below, I contacted the Cameroun .cm ccTLD and they indicate that they
have shut down the woild card operation on the .cm ccTLD.

Is there anyway of verifying this?

I am interested in how this would be technically verified, please send me some details,
including if possible, the detailed results.

Regards,

Paulos

Mr. Nankep,

Greetings from Malawi. I am on the ccNSo Council and an issue with
Cameroun's .cm ccTLD has come up in the ccNSO Council with respect to
wild cards, see:
http://ccnso.icann.org/workinggroups/agenda-council-15sep09.pdf

I just wanted to find out whether you know of anyone I can write to
on the.cm ccTLD and the wild card issue.

Do you work on the ..cm ccTLD?

Can you give me some details on the wild card DNS issue on the .cm
ccTLD?

Regards,

Paulos
