Current Status of Work Track 5

Work Track 5 held two meetings in April in which it continued to make progress on discussions related to geographic names at the top level.

4 April [community.icann.org]:

• Provided an update about progress made during ICANN61 [61.schedule.icann.org].
• Reviewed the Work Track 5 work plan.
• Discussed a proposed path forward on future treatment of 2-character country codes, 3-character country codes, and the long- and short-form of country and territory names (see slides [community.icann.org]).
• Considered additional elements of the country and territory names list included in the 2012 Applicant Guidebook.

18 April [community.icann.org]:

• Completed a second reading of the proposed path forward on future treatment of 2-character letter-letter combination country codes, 3-character country codes, and the long- and short-form of country and territory names (see slides [community.icann.org]).
• Considered potential future treatment of Additional Geographic Terms included in the 2012 Applicant Guidebook, including capital city names, city names, and sub-national place names.
• Began to discuss potential additional geographic names that were not included in the 2012 Applicant Guidebook.
• Encouraged members to explain what additional terms they felt should or should not receive special treatment in future rounds and the rationale for their positions.

Next Steps for Work Track 5

Following input from Work Track members, the leadership team is trying out a new meeting schedule. In May, it will begin holding weekly 60-minute meetings rather than 90-minute meeting every other week. The Work Track will continue to discuss the future treatment of geographic names contained in the 2012 Applicant Guidebook, as well as terms not included in the 2012 Applicant Guidebook.

Next meeting is May 2^nd at 05:00 UTC where capital cities and other cities will be discussed. If time, we will also discuss geonames not included in AGB 2012.
