Many thanks to Stephen.
Katrina, also many thanks for clarification. I agree with your reflections.
Also have checked section 7.5 of the by-laws.

Leonid, Stephen,

Thank you for informing us, Stephen!

NomCom appoints 8 directors to the Board. Mathematically it might be difficult for them not to appoint at least two people from the same region taking into account that there are only 5 regions. Actually, NomCom has selected two people from the same country in the past (not in the same year though) and they both serve on the Board. But, as Stephen pointed out, there are certain requirements to the composition of the Board and that might influence our choices. If, for example, 5 members of the Board come from one region we are not allowed to nominate a person from that region.

Which, actually, is kind of funny – I haven’t noticed any coordination of selection processes among SO/ACs. So, theoretically SO/ACs could all select people from the same region. How to decide which SO/ACs need to change their mind? A lottery?

Kind regards,

]{atrina

Greetings Leonid,

You have asked a thoughtful question.  This will require a bit of research for me to properly answer it.  I will do so soonest, as a cursory review of Article 7 of the Bylaws suggests that decisions of the NomCom, as well as other SO/AC’s, may impact the ability of the ccNSO to put forward candidates of their choosing.

Thank you, Stephen:

as an observer to the Council, may I ask a brief question as to whether there is a geographic diversity-related requirement/limitation applicable in a situation in which the NomCom selects  two Board members  that represent the same region.

Thank you,

Leonid

Greetings,

I am writing to you in my capacity as the ccNSO representative to the Empowered Community Administration.

Please be advised that the 2017 Nominating Committee has made a decision regarding ICANN Board Seats 7 and 8, as follows:

Board Seat 7: Avri Doria (North America)

Board Seat 8: Sarah Deutsch (North America)

Also, please be advised that they have selected Marita Moll (North America) for the upcoming NomCom vacancy on the ccNSO Council.

There is no action required of the ccNSO Council in this matter.  Under the Bylaws the Empowered Community Administration must formally notify the ICANN Secretary of the selection by the Nominating Committee of the individuals designated to fill Board seats 7 and 8.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Best Regards,

Stephen Deerhake
