Dear Gabi and fellow councillors,
After thinking about this a lot, I have decided not to attend the
Nairobi meeting. Even though me and my family are OK, the situation in
Chile is still not normal, with two strong aftershocks yesterday and
much social unrest. As some of you may know, beside my job at NIC
Chile, I am also head of the School of Engineering of the University of
Chile, and in that position I need to oversee this week the emergency
restoration works necessary to prepare our school to begin the academic
year this coming March 15. I would expect some of this issues to be
over in a week or so, but unfortunately the ICANN meeting is now, and
not in a week.
I will make an effort to participate remotely (which may be a bit of a
challenge, considering that the meeting will begin at 3am, Chile
time!), and in particular I will join the council meeting by telephone.
I regret not being able to be there, and wish you all a very successful
meeting.
