Dear Katrina,
The ICANN Academy Leadership Program (LP) during the ICANN64 Meeting in Kobe was another success and we are now preparing the 7thedition that is scheduled to take place 5-6 March 2020, two days prior to the official start of ICANN67 in Cancún, Mexico.
For this program, 2 (two) seats are reserved for representatives from the ccNSO. The program is designed for current and incoming leaders, helping to increase understanding of the complexity of ICANN and to develop facilitation skills, as well as building a network with other leaders. We are aware that understanding ICANN as an organization, the topics discussed within ICANN, and interaction within other stakeholder groups can be challenging for incoming leaders, but sometimes also for experienced leaders. ICANN and the community are making considerable efforts in order to help incoming leaders have a good start to their terms and to provide current leaders the opportunity to strengthen their leadership and facilitation skills. Opportunities for Leadership Program participants include the following:
Meet leaders from the other SOs/ACs and get an insight of the functionality and issues in other groups Discuss current ICANN topics in an in-depth manner Deepen the understanding of key ICANN processes Develop facilitation and leadership skills, focused personal effectiveness to run meetings and foster processes
A preliminary program is attached to this email. Kindly note that this is subject to change.
Accommodation for participants will be covered between Wednesday and Thursday, 4-5 March 2020, and participants will receive a stipend. Please note that flights will NOT be covered under this program, as incoming and current leaders are normally covered by the regular ICANN travel support. Please ensure that the leaders you select are being covered by ICANN Travel Support for their flights to Cancun for ICANN67.
We would like to ask you to identify two incoming or current leaders from your stakeholder group who are interested and available to participate in this program. We recommend that you also identify an alternate candidate. Kindly forward us the names and email addresses of the endorsed individuals no later than Wednesday, 13 November 2019, and ask them to register here by Friday, 15 November 2019 at 23:59 UTC.
We hope this program will meet the needs of your community. All participants will be encouraged to partake in an open exchange of their views, as this will help facilitate cross-constituency collaboration during their terms.
We are very happy to answer any questions you may have on this exciting LP and look forward to having your group’s participants confirmed.
Kind regards,
Sandra Hoferichter, Chair of the ICANN Academy Working Group

Those are both great suggestions, worthy of being supported I think. But as others have pointed out, there could well be others in the community, in fact I think I’m a bit under qualified to be on the council and could do with something like this (don’t worry though, even if I wanted to I can’t make those dates). I wonder whether a fairer process might be as follows: 1. We ask for nominations to go on this course with brief reasons why 2. We choose by electronic vote of the council. That way the selection is widened out beyond our current circle of contacts and the whole process looks more inclusive, even if we end up in the exact same place. Hi Nick I really like your idea, though for it to work we should have more time to send a call for submissions, review them and then vote. Something to discuss with ICANN Academy Working Group. That is why we now we rely on the people that catch our attention and look promising to contribute further to our community not only within the ccNSO, but cross community in ICANN. I wonder whether a fairer process might be as follows:
1. We ask for nominations to go on this course with brief reasons why 2. We choose by electronic vote of the council.
That way the selection is widened out beyond our current circle of contacts and the whole process looks more inclusive, even if we end up in the exact same place.

Dear Colleagues,
Sorry, I missed this one – we need to select 2 participants to the Leadership programme.
Do you have any suggestions? Maybe we could send the new chair of the MPC Barbara? Who could be the second candidate (from another region, not EU)? Maybe Alyssa from .ca? She seems to be very interested and active. Any other candidates?
Thanks,

Nick, All, The leadership training programme is an excellent opportunity to learn about other communities – what they are, how they work, why things are what they are. However, there’s more to that. One thing that hit me when Alejandra and I took the course in Dublin in… year, was that actually all information about the ccNSO that participants from other communities learned, had to come from us. We were the ones who told about the ccNSO, about our members, about our processes, answered tricky questions, etc. The idea of the programme is to help current and future leaders to broaden their view by looking outside their community. My feeling was that participants are supposed to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of their own community before taking part in the course. That is the reason why we should not look at this programme as an opportunity to grow. This is something for those who already are very (very!) deeply involved. Therefore, naturally, Councillors should be on top of the list (however, I believe they should spend some time on the Council, therefore, I think it would not be the best idea to select the new Councillor who will be elected from the AP region as she/he should learn more about the ccNSO and the Council first). However, I proposed Barbara because she is already very active and in her role as the chair of the MPC she will have to work very closely with other SO/AC/SGs. I am sure she will be able to tell about the ccNSO and I am sure that her knowledge about other communities (and networking with reps from other communities) will help in discussions about cross-community collaboration during setting agenda for ICANN meetings. Barbara is from EU region; therefore, I think it would be a very bad move to select the second participant from the same region. Speaking about Nick’s suggestion to be more open and inclusive, I agree it would be a good thing if we had 1) more seats, 2) more flexibility in terms of the level of involvement of our participants, 3) more time to run a proper selection. Speaking about the last point, I apologise that I missed the first e-mail from 2 October, Joke’s follow-up email, reminders on ICANN Leadership Digest… It feels as someone hypnotised me and made me miss everything related to this programme (I blame Martians). Even worse, it happens every time (there are several Martial space ships orbiting the Earth, I suspect). Maybe we should identify potential participants on an ongoing basis and keep the list close whenever we need it? Any other suggestions on how to solve this? We have only 2 seats. I wish there were more opportunities. It is really an excellent course! Thanks Katrina – you make a good point about participants from the ccNSO community also being the face and voice of our community at these sessions, and also not to have both participants from the same region. Of course time is very short this time so we should just make the best decision we can in the time available, and personally I’m happy to leave it to your discretion. Just a suggestion but perhaps consider for the next time wider circulation (probably many folks are completely ignorant about this initiative) and then a lightweight selection process, may be even we could ask a small group of us to make the decision? Finally I agree it does sound like an excellent programme for the council members 😊 Best wishes Nick From: Katrina Sataki <katrina@nic.lv> Sent: Wednesday, November 6, 2019 2:59 PM To: Nick Wenban-Smith <Nick.Wenban-Smith@nominet.uk>; 'ccnso-council' <ccnso-council@icann.org> Subject: Re: [ccnso-council] FW: Invitation - RSVP - ICANN Leadership Program (LP) 2020 Nick, All, The leadership training programme is an excellent opportunity to learn about other communities – what they are, how they work, why things are what they are. Dear Colleagues,
Sorry, I missed this one ? we need to select 2 participants to the Leadership programme.
Do you have any suggestions? Maybe we could send the new chair of the MPC Barbara? Who could be the second candidate (from another region, not EU)? Maybe Alyssa from .ca? She seems to be very interested and active. Any other candidates?
Thanks,

Dear Katrina,
The ICANN Academy Leadership Program (LP) during the ICANN64 Meeting in Kobe was another success and we are now preparing the 7thedition that is scheduled to take place 5-6 March 2020, two days prior to the official start of ICANN67 in Cancun, Mexico.
Opportunities for Leadership Program participants include the following: Meet leaders from the other SOs/ACs and get an insight of the functionality and issues in other groups Discuss current ICANN topics in an in-depth manner Deepen the understanding of key ICANN processes Develop facilitation and leadership skills, focused personal effectiveness to run meetings and foster processes
