[ACTION REQUIRED] Topics to discuss with the ICANN Board at ICANN 75
Dear Councillors As you recall, we agreed on having a joint meeting with the ICANN Board at ICANN 75. The Board's topic is: “*What collaborative actions should the Community, Board and Org be undertaking to further progress achieving our strategic priorities?*”
From our last call some initial topics were suggested:
1. Stephen proposed "Board’s selective adherence to the bylaws". 2. Jordan proposed "How can we start streamlining and simplifying how ICANN works, reversing the trend of rising complexity and slowness". Stephen and Jordan, could you please expand on your proposals? @Everyone, please: 1. Send your thoughts on the Board's topic. 2. Comment on the proposed topics from our side. 3. Feel free to propose any other topics. I think the Board suggestion and Jordan’s are in effect the same topic! I agree with Nick’s observation. We may find it easier to nudge ICANN with the let us help you help us approach, but I also understand the frustration within the volunteer community and the impact that has on current and future volunteers in terms of the stickiness that we’ve seen emerge. Maybe that is the way to start framing it, not so much around the specific experience but on the effect this has on volunteers, which would mean we could link it directly to the board’s “further progress” topic. It pretty much becomes one and the same. In that vein, much as I want to see COI explained every time a new council at our level is formed, maybe we need to do the greatest hits 10-minute presentation of what the ccNSO community is all about to the board with each new iteration, especially those being exposed to our community for the first time. Dear Alejandra, all, I’d obviously be in favour of my one, but that goes without saying 😊 In terms of what Stephen proposed, I wonder if there is actually a common thing underlying both of our suggestions. ICANN has in some ways become very slow to achieve outcomes, and to the extent that is true, it does create some risks to the confidence and trust that people can have in ICANN’s version of the multi-stakeholder model. Selective adherence to the bylaws has the same impact. Maybe the bigger question is, if building confidence in ICANN’s multistakeholder means making it perform better (between the organisation and the community), what are our key priorities to drive that performance improvement? Just an idea, hoping to spark some discussion.
