NOTES | UAC | 17 April 2024 (13:00 UTC)

  1. Welcome & Roll Call

Apologies by Abdalmonem, Sarmad, Seda

Welcome by Regina, who will chair the meeting today.

2.            Admin matters

a.            SOI updates

The ccNSO Statement of Interest form:  https://forms.gle/79Jw4wSnNhn5W4Z46

Bart: if there is a change in affiliation, please inform the committee.

Filling out the SOI form is voluntary for members of this committee.

Regina: members completed the form in Autumn. Relatively recent

Kim: If you’re unsure, please confirm here:  https://community.icann.org/x/doAFEg

Bart: example was Ai-Chin or Qing Cai leaving CNNIC

b.    Action Items

3.            UA Day events 2024: report back (Mirjana, and others)

a.            UA Day Belgrade

Mirjana: We were host. Very satisfied with the event. The venue was very nice. Almost 180 people were on site. The community still does not necessarily know about UA. satisfied with the event

Regina: quite a good echo in the media.

Feedback about awareness among users?

Mirjana: indeed! Marketing department is following up closely on this. They might have better insights regarding the follow-up.

Bart: Could you perhaps ask them, for the next meeting? One of the added values is the impact on the outside world. Invite someone from the marketing team?

Mirjana: Yes, I can try. I am not very involved in daily registry matters.

Bart: What was the role of the registry in organising the sessions? How does UA Day look like

Regina: from the format it was a series about panel discussions. Local community, UNESCO, ITU, ICANN, tech topics too. All with interest in IDNs and UA. The person from UNESCO was interested in hosting an event next year.

If colleagues from marketing cannot join yet at the next opportunity, a future event would be good too. Imagine they need time to evaluate the results.

Bart: 1 May. Many people have holiday

Regina: part of Europe has holidays on 8 May

Wednesday 8 May is a public holiday as well (end of the WWII), but it seems it is not in many countries, here in CZ and for example France, but e.g. Serbia celebrates on 9th May, right

Mirjana: better. I will be celebrating 40 years of networking at RIPE (missing notes)

Bart: if she could present about the event, and the impact on the community.

Vadim: It would be perfect to hear Diana as a person deeply involved to all organizational parts of the event

Anna: important, and a new experience. It was high level. CEO ICANN attended. She gave a very interesting speech about the importance of UA and multilingualism.

Personally received info about academia. Important to educate new people. Understand how to awaken the interest of the business community. Some parts will be of interest to them. I recall someone from the university, Alexandra, that she tried to inform her students about UA, IDNs etc . But the group has different levels. Sarmad then talked about various models that can be used to organise some lectures, seminars etc. we spoke about impact. 7 May there will be an international UA Day in Armenia. I will speak about what happened in Belgrade. Media will pick up the news, with pictures etc. our PR Team asked me about the topics that were addressed at UA Day. big interest. Example of best experience, and big results. Thanks to Serbia for organizing this.

Vadim: great event. Huge effort from the host side. I saw the workload Diana had to manage. Constructive conversations. As a speaker myself, I tried to have a panel discussion. Also attended the social events. Different aspects to UA. Specialists from different areas: domain industry, owners email servers, internet service providers… Event needs to be repeated in future.

Anna: face to face meetings are very important

Vadim: many thanks to ICANN.

Regina: thanks for sharing your impressions. Let’s go to item c on the agenda

b.    Other UA day events

Regina: defer to future meetings? Knows about future events

Anna: https://uaday.am

https://uaday.am/en/

7 May - National Universal Acceptance Day, 2024. You can see URL above. There you also can see the materials and agenda from Regional Universal Acceptance Day, 28 March ,2023

c.    Is there a role for UAC in helping to organize future UA day events?

Bart: is indeed one of the goals by UAC, as included in the Roadmap

4.            ccNSO UA session @ICANN80

Topics to date:

·         Present work to date (library etc)

·         UA days: those done to date, and invite to next UA Days

·         UA Readiness ccTLDs to date: why important, what can be done, need for additional data (survey)?

Bart: excellent opportunity to raise awareness about future UA Day 2024

Regina: share views of the ccTLDs attending here. Serbian registry’s testimonial would be the one with the most impact. Impressive, in terms of outreach.

Bart: ok, topic to further explore

Do you agree with the topics?

Regina: yes. Recurring topic. Include in action items.

Bart: selection UA Day events

You noted just a few ccTLDs that applied.

Regina: some of the affiliations were indeed related to ccTLDs.

Bart: informing the community about UA Day 2025 in Istanbul does not make sense. It would be too late. Hence include it on the agenda in Kigali.

Regina: Yes, useful. Call for proposals will go out in September probably. ICANN 81 is too late.

Bart: regarding work to date.

Asking Kim about the outreach planning

Kim: met with ICANN org comms and marketing team, whether they could assist us. Asked them 10 days ago. Last week they had staff meetings and holidays, so limited availability. Waiting for feedback.

Do not expect feedback next week. Will follow up.

Bart: this group should have a basic idea of the direction of travel

Kim: yes, progress report.

Bart: as per the roadmap, UAC needs to run a survey too, and that requires a lot of effort.

Regina: first determine what we need to measure.

Bart: share info about the survey at ICANN80 when we talk about current and upcoming work by UAC

Kim shows the draft ccNSO block schedule.

Bart: UAC will meet at ICANN80 on Wednesday, 12 June. 09:00-10:15 local time. There will be no ccNSO cocktail on Tuesday evening. Previously we foresaw a slot on Thursday, but that does not match with the overall planning of the work by other ccnso working groups. The World Cafe Session requires a 90 min. Block, plus time for introductions and agenda-setting.

Regina: UTC time?

Joke & Kim: local time

Joke: 9 am local time is 7 UTC

Regina: ccNSO GAC meeting. Different topics?

Bart: yes. But meeting still needs to be confirmed. Might be deferred to Istanbul, due to the heavy GAC agenda for ICANN80.

5.            Next meetings:

24 April 2024 at 13 UTC | review of surveys to date

Regina: I can share the type of questions included in the survey. Results not yet available.

Bart: to be able to compare the 2 surveys, it might be wise to check whether there is overlap with the ICANN survey? Involving Seda?

Regina: Which surveys?

Bart: yours, and the ICANN survey on ccTLD UA readiness.

Regina: will be documented.

Bart: We asked Seda to present.

Due to upcoming public holidays, Bart suggests we do not meet on 1 May, but instead meet on 8 May and 15 May.  otherwise there is not sufficient time to prepare for ICANN80

Bart: asking Anna report on Armenian UA Day

Vadim: question about repository. no feedback about receipt of the document.

Kim: will take that offline. Regarding the status of the submissions

Anna: sent it for the first time in February. They asked me to wait

Kim: i see it in the tracker

Mirjana: when shall we invite Diana?

Bart: 8 may. If that does not work for her, we can do it on the 24th.

Mirjana: who will arrange that she gets invited?

Bart: please ask Kim.

6.            AOB

Bart: question to Qing Cai regarding continuation in her current role

Qing Cai: i will stay, no changes

Joke: probably mix-up. Glad Qing Cai continuous in her current role

7.            Adjourn

Thank you!
