New members Following a call for volunteers, new members joined the Committee. Thank you for joining today Holmes (.mo): first time joining. In the future, would be looking forward to be involved Sami (.bh): we organised UA Day for the past 2 years. We have a university program promoting UA Day. 6 universities, ICANN org working together. Honour to join today. Looking forward to contribute Abdalmonem: hackathon. Was successful. Introduces Regina as well. Benedict: introduces himself. Benedict Obirim Sagoe, staff member at the Ghana Domain Name Registry (GDNR). As an organization associated with .GH ccTLD, we are keen to actively participate in and contribute to the efforts related to Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Universal Acceptance (UA). We have successfully organized two UA day training and awareness in Ghana (2023 and 2024). I was the lead organizer in the 2023 which focused on introduction to IDN. The 2024 one was organized in collaboration with EGIGFA and the Association of African Universities(AAU). I believe that my involvement will be beneficial to the global ccTLD community. Bart: Sabrina Wilkinson applied for membership as well, but was unable to join today 1. Progress Library Abdalmonem: useful resource for ccTLDs. Suggestion to add an additional link. Bart: The ccNSO Universal Acceptance Library is a useful resource on UA-related topics for ccTLDs. You can do both searches and suggestions for content in the library. This library is maintained by the ccNSO Universal Acceptance Committee (UAC). Read more here: https://community.icann.org/x/UIAvEQ It is a vetted list of resources. There is an editorial committee which examines the resources, to ensure they are of relevance to the ccTLD community. Seda: good reminder for me. The UASG, the EAI WG has developed a certification guide for email service providers. In use now. We are encouraging the organisations to use the self-certification guide. ccTLDs might have connections with local email providers? Abdalmomen: more than 2 years in the making. This is relevant to ccTLDs. Mail server, regaistrants using their own languages. Seda: https://uasg.tech/eai-certification Abdalmomen: hackathon by .bh. Good practice. Also good example from Vadim. Sami: follow-up hackathon next week. Abdalmonem: good practice. Successful case study. Share once done. Seda: One example for the early adapter of EAI self certification guide is for the Thai email addresses. https://thnic.or.th/en/news-naxsolution_ Abdalmonen: UA is not only for IDNs. Also new gTLDs that use IDNs. ASCII ones. Other levels. Unicodes considered as IDNs. Seda: UA Curriculum documents: https://community.icann.org/display/TUA/Draft+UA+Curriculum 3. UA Day 2025 a. Review UAC Webinar UA Day: what went well? What can be improved? Did it have an impact? Bart: webinar on 18 september. What was the impression? From audience and presenters?
What went well? Abdalmonem: flow of the session. Different aspects covered. Some stats shared by SEDA and testimonials by .th and .cl . flow was fantastic. We were successful. Good for new members Seda: it went well. We received a good number of proposals. We started accepting proposals earlier. Considering to extend the deadline. It was useful. 5 ccTLDs submitted proposals. One in the pipeline. Potentially some additional ones coming up. Here is a reminder that the call for proposals is still open. Interest was high. Provided relevant information. Seda: usually we receive more proposals close to the deadline. Half of the proposals compared to last year. Still a few days left. Regina: good focus. Experience from peers. Agree to extend deadline. Bart: refer to webinar. We can promote the extension of the deadline to all ccTLDs. Joke: https://community.icann.org/display/ccnsowkspc/ccNSO+Webinars recording is here
What can be improved? Abdalmomen: prepare sooner. Bart: content? Or the marketing of the webinar? Abdalmomen: the marketing of the webinar. Bart: good preparation. You could sense it from the flow of the webinar itself.
1. Cooperation with UNESCO see: https://www.icann.org/en/announcements/details/icann-and-unesco-join-forces-... Bart: for your information Seda: in contact with UNESCO to shortlist the UA Day event proposals. Regina: they will not organise, but promote the events selected? Seda: collaborating on existing events. Currently no fixed plan for dedicated events. Regina: discussion at UA Day in Belgrade. We also plan to renew the MoU with UNESCO. Would be good to do sth together next year. Will reach out to you offline. Bart: panelists selected. Informed ICANN staff Future update from the panelists to UAC would be nice 4. Status UA readiness Survey & next steps Abdalmonen: one of the main tasks ahead for us. Survey. During the 4 September meeting, we did mentimeter polling. UAC members participated. Joke: 4 september brainstorming Summary of the results from the mentimeter polling. Abdalmomen: can we ask the new members to respond to these questions Bart: variety of responses. These are your responses. Not staff driven. Do you think that input will change? Abdalmomen: not really. But the new members adopted good practices. Would be good to share Bart: we need a way to converge. What type of information are you seeking? We need convergence Abdalmomen: we need to move forward Joke: diversity of responses. Goal for UAC is to showcase testimonials Survey is one tool. But there are other tools that could reach the goal Bart: organise a session in Seattle. Explore with the ccTLDs present to explore what are obstacles for UA adoption. Is there a way to use mentimeter to do this? We will share an example with you. Rough idea of how such a session could look like Survey is a tool to verify views. In depth search for risks, obstacles. Confirm potentially afterwards via a survey. Thus potentially reach a broader audience. Verify the outcomes of your initial findings. Sami: i have a concern. Survey input collected. What is the implementation plan? Achieving targets? Lots of discussions at ICANN. How to share results or resources between countries and TLDs. Abdalmomen: that happened for DASC. who did what? Concerns raised by Sami, we are collecting info. Away from ccTLDs. Confidential results. Data collected will not be shared. Bart: how do we share info across the ccTLD community? Sami: actual working solutions, technology. Bart: UAC could act as a broker Here is the charter of the UAC, which highlights the scope of UAC. https://ccnso.icann.org/en/workinggroups/uac-terms-reference-01jul23-en.pdf Sami: showcasing the work will help. Make it easy to find information. Joke: Here is the charter of the UAC, which highlights the scope of UAC. https://ccnso.icann.org/en/workinggroups/uac-terms-reference-01jul23-en.pdf Bart: being in a room is indeed creating that network of people. A survey is not the tool to achieve the goal you try to achieve. DASC had some follow-up session driven from the results of the 1st survey. Where they organised sessions, they see some positive changes. Might be independent of their work. People are alerted to what is happening. Abdalmonen: the DASC challenges are inspiring. We learn from eachother. Bart: consider whether we could solicit info in Seattle in another way Seda: In addition to the library, you may reach some resources and tools that shows the UA readiness levels in different platforms, and code samples that can help make your systems UA ready. https://www.icann.org/ua-evaluations-en Bart: suggestion on how the mentimeter polling in Seattle could look like Similar to what you did on 4 Sept. You can repeat the exercise in a broader context in seattle. Abdalmomen: i like the flow. How could others answer the question. Question regarding blocking. Other participants might be able to make suggestions on how to overcome the blockage. Bart: indeed. Start the conversation. Then you could consider a follow-up survey, which is more targeted. Abdalmomen: have a plan for the survey. Review the questions. Future updates after the survey. What are we looking for? Ask UASG to help ccTLDs. Something like that. A suggestion. Bart: let’s revisit this discussion at the next meeting, on 23 oct. We will check with the UASG how to move forward. Options: survey. OR. Announce in Istanbul that UAC will organise a session at ICANN82, potentially to be follow-up with a more targeted survey. Let’s discuss when we meet next. Take final decision at the workshop in Istanbul. Survey development will take effort. Opportunity for the newer members to become familiar with the issues around surveys and mentimenter Abdalmomen: this is how it works. Make the announcement at ICANN 81. Regina: makes sense. We could get interesting hints at the next icann meeting. Always tricky to decide what to do with the data. Learn from ccTLDs what would make them to decide to join. Introdcng self-ceritifacation. Boost for IDNs. what would be useful for them? They need to report to their board or governance structure. They need to justify the effort and the obstacles. Practical insights is what we need. Bart: such a session like the one in Seattle provides a sound basis to update your road map. You got limited resources. 5. In-person meetings Istanbul: topics? Universal Acceptance Committee (UAC) Working Session Saturday, 9 November | 09:00-12:00 6. Next meetings: a. 23 October 2024| 13.00 UTC b. Saturday 9 November 2024 | 9-10 am Local time (06.00-07.00 UTC), In- person ( & remote), c. 20 November 2024 | 14.00 UTC (TBD’ed due to day-light saving some of attendees) 7. AOB Seda: progress indicators. ccTLD info needed. Could ccnso and UAC help us in getting IDN ccTLD registration data for 2nd and 3rd level, to develop UA progress indicators. Similarly on the evamualition page, there is a survey on EAI. quarterly basis. Data based on gTLD zones. Is UAC interested in something similar. Potential discussion at Istanbul? Bart: please send an email to secretariat. We can include it in agenda for next meetings. 8.
