During the call (and in the response) the Board did appreciate such exercise of examples. The examples may not be concrete ones but they are not vague too. I feel that we should continue to proceed but in a more holistic approach (i.e. from applicant, manager, Board, community... perspectives ; potential positive and negative impact, etc.) so that we can record our thoughts and organize them in the final report. Maybe few more column's should be added in Marika's spreadsheet.

On the other hand -- it is possible to have the mechanism that the WG defines, say 20 examples, and all are considered ok by the Board. These will be the project "titles" for worldwide applicants to apply for fund under these titles (or categories).

Look forward to hearing more comments. Thanks!

Best,

Ching

That is why we moved to open and interoperable Internet.  Of course, we can say:  open and interoperable Internet, consistent with ICANN's mission [link to ICANN's mission].

SO: This should work, though I do think interoperability is a given in the word Internet; if the networks are not interoperable then it isn't the Internet.

I agree with the board's observation with regards to indicating examples; I personally hope that we will use examples as a reference to inspire our thoughts in producing mechanisms that helps achieve our objectives and those examples doesn't necessarily have to be included in formal write-ups.

I agree with Maureen and would re-inforce that the Board's guidance on how our important mission of "an interoperable Internet" can be incorporated in the letter

In fact, I believe doing this would assist in responding to the important point made by Nadira Alaraj - what is the motivation for them to help us with their guidance/thoughts/information

An interoperable Internet is important so that all can participate in creating and enjoying the benefits of being connected to other people, businesses, employers and increase everyone's opportunities for being involved in economic, social and leisure activities

The Board letter indicates that they were concerned about how specific our examples were in this initial update to the Board of the group's activities, but as we are now working towards a more ultimate outcome, our next step will no doubt be to look at these examples from a more high level about overall recommendations for potential applications, since we have just been through the comprehensive process of gathering these specific possibilities and discussing their pros and cons. And we have some examples of suggestions that were not considered appropriate.

Although it is still the work of the group to provide its own guidelines for the uses of the fund, with reference to the issue of the group's intent to support ICANN's vision of an "interoperable internet", I believe we would greatly benefit from more concrete advice from the Board about how we might be able achieve the intent of this direction, in order to pass on to potential applicants about how they might more appropriately use the funds to support this important ICANN purpose.
