Hi everyone, Marilyn, I suggest you check again the mindmap Marika put together to help collect comment and input from all of us on the list (attached again). It has the objective and sub-objectives proposed/mapped out and the Open Internet is hanging from there. The reasoning behind why we end it up trying to define (for the purpose of fund allocation) what the open Internet is (or is not) is basically to help people know if they are eligible or not to apply, and for those in charge of making funding decisions later on (a selection committee I guess) to know what criteria to apply. It is important to try to put ourselves in their shoes, to know if with the information provided, one will be able to put together a successful application, or to apply the criteria to support decisions. I am in favor of be aligned with ICANN’s mission but I have also been highlighting the importance to support the technical community that allow the Internet to be what it is today. Many of us have highlighted how the three communities (domains, numbers and standards). However, as it happened while the Drafting Team was working on the charter, there was work done in parallel to change the mission (to the one we have now). That could happen again, so it will be best if the objective of the fund and its sub-objectives give a bit of wiggle room (without deviating too much) so that the fund is really making a contribution to projects/initiatives that might struggle to get financial support as traditional donors do not cover them, or as private businesses do not see the commercial value of them. So, yes, stick to the mission is important but contextualizing it will be useful to assist both applicants and selectors.
