Hello, Being a domainer (I invest in domain names as a business). I am 100% against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I am submitting this comment to OPPOSE the proposed Amendment 3. The global DNS registration system should be run as a public good. It is not clear who the beneficiaries of this Amendment 3 are aside from Verisign. Verisign reported $300 million in revenue and $198 million in operating income last quarter. These price hikes are hardly necessary and will only serve to enrich this private sector company at the expense of the entire internet ecosystem that relies on .com domains for their web sites. It could be argued this is also not in Verisign's own interest as well, as higher .com registry fees will push small businesses and entrepreneurs away from the open web and make it more appealing to operate within the various walled gardens like Facebook. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate. Please do not adopt this. Is ICANN going to ignore the overwhelming sentiment of comments opposing the Verisign encouraged price hikes? After all that is what ICANN did last time public comments were taken with .org and .biz domains. https://www.icann.org/resources/agreement/org-2019-06-30-en Is ICANN really subservient to Verisign? Verisign seems to think ICANN is quite malleable: Quote: Verisign's CEO ( James Bidzos ) : We believe these discussions with ICANN are nearly complete. While it will be inappropriate at this time to provide more details, I can say that we were satisfied with the results so far. As noted, this is an ICANN process and we expect that before long ICANN will be publishing for public comment the documents we have been discussing. Is ICANN's collection of these comments merely a legal formality? Was this proposed policy change influenced at all by the $20,000,000 Verisign agreed to build into Verisign's renewed contract with ICANN? If the answer to any of the above questions is "yes", we have to ask another two questions: Is ICANN displaying signs of corporate greed? Would ICANN benefit from a top-down restructuring? .COM is the backbone of the internet commerce and default TLD anyone considers buying when starting any business, small or large.
