These backroom, shady deals have to stop. This is NOT ok! Jacking up prices like this so Verisign and ICANN can have some mutually beneficial deal that enriches them without oversight, using the payment of 20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure is just bad, bad, bad! Hello, I'm writing to express my concern regarding Proposed Amendment 3 (PA3). I do not think PA3 is good for the future of the internet despite what it may offer in the way of security improvements. There are other, better ways to achieve those goals without the dramatic price increases the amendment provides for. The internet is essentially a global public utility. It's not regulated as such (who would truly have the authority?), but it should be run as such. Since the original changes which froze pricing, it has. I understand the need of price increases. Running and maintaining DNS costs more money now than it did years ago. ICANN doesn't directly raise money through the sale of domain names, but operates on donations from companies who do. Those companies need to make more money to donate more money. All of that is fine. However, the amount and scheduling of increases is concerning. My main concerns are the increase percentage and the scheduling. Year-over-year for 4 years followed by only a two year freeze doesn't make sense for a utility. It /especially/ doesn't make sense considering that the same agreement applies following the total 6 year period. It allows for very significant price changes over the same period of time where, historically, we've seen /none/ and during which the internet has also matured and become essential in so many ways it never was before. That's what we're sacrificing with this strategy—the expansive growth and development we've seen over the last 8 years. Consider 5% every 3 years instead. It's more reasonable, it's more gradual, and it reflects increased costs in a more realistic way. The current schema is clearly a money grab and it's insulting. To whom it may concern, I am writing to express my absolute disgust at the news of this backdoor deal to increase the price of .com wholesale prices. This increase will drastically hurt small web developers such as myself as well as other small businesses that need a website to drive their business. I could totally understand a small increase here or there as the cost of living increases. But to setup a deal that would allow a rate increase of up to 70% for 8 out of the next 10 years is absolutely asinine. All this will do is hurt the end user and all the business along the way. Please reconsider this deal.

I recently learned that ICANN recently chose to make changes to a contract with Verisign, Inc. in secret. These changes were done without consulting the ICANN community or Internet users. These changes will ultimately cause detrimental harm to the Internet as a whole by increasing .COM domain prices by 40% or more. This is a typical, elitist method of choking out something that is a right to all inhabitants of the world; an affordable Internet. I am sick and tired of the elites and 1-percenters taking advantage of the hardworking people of the world for their own benefit and pleasure. If working for the good of humanity is equal to making close-door deals, then those doing so are clearly working evil instead. I strongly oppose Admendment 3 and highly recommend that this amendment be scrap in every way. I also recommend that all proposals be clearly advertised to everyone that would be affected (usually the world, considering we are talking about the Internet) and given much more than a few weeks for public comment. No more secrets and closed-door deals. Greg Sabens

I am a registrant of multiple .com domain names. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest.

Hello, I am sending this email to comment on the proposed new iCANN pricing changes. As a longtime user and low-level developer of web application alongside the three businesses I've started and own, I feel I have enough history to appreciate the depth and breadth of what iCANN's proposal means across a few different web user profiles. I just can't see how one organization, who's attempt to some degree is financially hijacking the system literally everyone has become so deeply embedded and dependent on is just wrong. When a company has virtually no competition, and has been an active participant-(of course alongside many organizations who stand to benefit from possible changes to the web) in promoting deeper and deeper involvement from everyone, and has free reign to take those rare conditions and run against the good to almost every American-(global citizen?), who can read and hold a phone, something has to change. There are reasons that tight rules and conditions are in place for other organizations that are in a similar situation where free-market conditions can come into play forcing competitors to provide the best solution at the best price-not any price. Companies like electric utility companies (which I know a little about), communication companies, etc... When similar kinds of controls are non-existent, and the competitive market forces to keep pricing in check are absent, can anyone blame a U.S. company for taking what they want, any way they want? You should not make changes that ultimately hurt a large portion of the .com owners, many of whom, like me, do not make substantial (if any) income from their domain ownership. To Whom it May Concern, I am writing in regards to Proposed Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I am a software engineer with multiple registered domain names used for both personal and business purposes. I wholeheartedly OPPOSE this proposed change for the following reasons: 1. If this proposed change were to take it effect, within 10 years, .COM domains could cost approximately 70% more than the current wholesale price of $7.85. The proposed increases do not align with the current rate of inflation and no justification has been given regarding the reasoning for these massive price increases. 2. Lack of accountability. As part of this proposed amendment, Verisign has greed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years. However, there are no stipulations in place regarding how this money will be used or any outside accountability mechanisms for ensuring all dealings are open and honest. 3. The proposed changes will put new registrars at a significant disadvantage. Existing registrars receive 6 months notice for impending price increases and have the opportunity to lock-in prices at a pre-increase rate for up to 10 years. However, new domain registrars will not be able to receive these discounts, giving incumbent registrars a distinct advantage and thus stifling innovation. I urge that the current proposal be abandoned and that a fairer and more transparent price increase model be adopted. Price increases should be consistent with the rate of inflation and not subject to arbitrary agreements made by companies whose interests might not align with the greater good of the internet. “Verisign, Inc.: An Internet Monopoly” Verisign is indeed some kind of legal monopoly, the company with the exclusive rights to issue Dot-com domains, they faces no viable competitive pressures to rein in costs, will likely then seek a price increase. The US Government has stepped in before to freeze Dot-com prices. It is time for it to do so again to protect Internet users. Best Regards!
