As a business owner, I understand that it is important to be able to stay in business and charge a reasonable rate for the services that we offer. While I can understand raising rates, the amount the rate rises is my concern. It has been stated that you’ll be able to raise rates as much as 70%. Now, if I was going to be getting SOMETHING for that extra 70% then maybe, but that’s not the case here. Are we getting upgraded services, better security, stronger infrastructure, anything? I sincerely doubt it. If I was to increase my costs by 70% to my customers, I’d be out of business pretty quickly. I hope the same occurs for you if you decided to move forward with this. Also, I hope someone runs your greedy ass over and then backs up and runs you over again, and then does it 70 more times.

Giving them the go-ahead to increase pricing on .com TLD's in exchange for money invested in ICANN is reprehensible. As a web developer whose clients will be negatively impacted by your agreement, I am appalled. You should be focused on serving the end-user, not on the profits of a huge corporation. Shame on you! I recently learned about a proposed Amendment 3 that would significantly impact .COM domains. I am writing to voice my *opposition* to the proposal. First, a proposed increase of 7% each of 8 out of 10 years is over and above the rate of inflation and completely unreasonable. If a price increase is necessary it should be tied to the inflation rate; a more rational and reasonable increase. Furthermore, ICANN and/or Verisign should provide a justification for the need to increase prices. Second, the report that ICANN will receive a $20 million payment from Verisign is concerning. There has been no explanation of why this payment is being made (sounds a lot like a bribe) or how the additional revenue will be used by ICANN. ICANN is mandated to operate "in the public interest"; this seems only to be in the interest of ICANN and Verisign. Third, allowing Verisign to act as a domain registrar is a conflict of interest since they are an operator of a TLD. Verisign should either be an operator or a registrar. To allow the company to function in both sectors sets up the significant possibility of abuse of power and the potential for a monopoly or near monopoly. This is counter to the mandate of ICANN to govern the domain name system "in the public interest". I urge ICANN to put "the public interest" first and reject this proposal. Scott Geiger

Such an important decision must be widely discussed and agreed with the internet community and the domain name registrars. Please do not raise the prices of .COM domains! Many people that use them are small businesses that are just trying to participate on a level playing field. They don't have the money big business do like Coca Cola or Home Depot. We already have plenty of stuff against us like the astronomical expense of shorter domains or acronyms of our business name. If we can't afford to own .COM's and reap the benefits TLD's enjoy in search results then that's just one more nail in the coffin of the little guy. We are also begging you to not allow Verisign operate as a registrar. Please continue to be one of the last forces in place that protect the little guy. I am appalled that Verisign may be granted the ability to dramatically increase .com registration/renewal prices as part of its new ICANN contract. This TLD is simply too important and affects too many people to bear such increases. I registered my first domain — a .com domain, of course — when the web was still new, over 25 years ago. Many other people, including moms and working-class individuals, have registered their own domains over that time period. The .com TLD is part of our collective heritage, one that should not be saddled with these onerous and unwarranted price increases. Dear ICANN, I've been informed that ICANN is slated to accept $20 million additional dollars from Versign to continue service registrations. This could lead to 70% higher fees and such potential for mass expense to teh public requires disclosure of the purpose of the additional funding. Absent such explanations, it may be necessary to pursue regulation through the FTC, FCC or other authorities to ensure that public access to what amounts to public space is not exploited without oversight. Until now, this has been deemed unnecessary, but the most recent change proposal opens possibilities to consumer exploitation and restriction of trade. This will not be well received among honest governance bodies and may lead to unwelcome administrative costs to Verisgn, ICANN, and vendors increasing expenses that benefit no one at all. These costs should not be weighed positively against the current system, so I implore Verisign and ICANN to tighten the parameters of the contract to head off potential misuse and looking to domain registrations as a lucrative source of profit. The backlash will be fierce. The internet is a place where bad press can be abundant and swift. Mark Twain was quoted, " Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel and paper by the ton.” It seems yet wiser not to pick fights with people who wield pixels that are magnitudes cheaper yet. I'm a stake-holder as a registered .com site-owner, so I would like my small say in what you charge for my site, which is personal and makes no money. I can, sort of, understand the need to raise rates at times. But how much do you need to make? Everyone wants to be on the 'net. I can't therefore, understand how you folks aren't making enough money under the current rules? I'm against your proposal. It basically says "screw you" to all of your millions of users. But then that's what big business is all about, isn't it? Seeing how much money they can make and everyone else can be damned. Henry S.
