Should icann.org wish to receive $20M from Verisign at the probable expense to .com users, the least you could do it democratize the process and implement more transparency in the way the funds will be spent. It is only right that if you stand to gain from your users, then you have an accountability to them as well. And that things should not be changed without informing all the stakeholders.

The pressure is constant for lower prices in hosting and in domain name registrations. As a result there is a significant increase in .eu registrations and national .gr domains. Dear Madam, or Sir, I am concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement because it will affect, not just me, buy any individual who would like their own domain name. I am 100% sure that no corporation will object to the 28% cost increase every six years as they earn money off their domain name and paying almost any amount would be acceptable to them. However, there are a great deal of small businesses that would see this as a burden as well as individual users out there that have purchased their own domain name and are using it for personal use, not commercial use. Several of us have multiple domain names, if for no other reason than to protect our own names from being used to run a website. I personally have about 6 that I use to protect myself and my family while also allowing my children to be able to have a domain name that is exclusively theirs. 20 year Cost analysis: $ 7.85 / year 2018 $10.29 / year 2023 (31% increase over 2018) $13.49 / year 2029 (72% increase over 2018) $17.68 / year 2035 (125% increase over 2018) $23.17 / year 2041 (195% increase over 2018) I am aware that the 7% is a maximum per year for each of the four years and, theoretically, there could be no increase or a sub 7% increase some years, however, I have little faith on this being the norm and, most certainly, CANNOT plan on it being any less than the full 7% in any fiscal plans made. I understand it would be extremely difficult for you to create a regulation that would charge businesses more and individuals less, however, that may be what is required at this time. This would leave a loophole for businesses to have an individual register their domain name, however, no corporation of any size will be willing to leave their domain names in private hands. This would also allow fledgling businesses (aka start-up’s) to keep their costs low at first. Remember, many businesses have been started in individual's garages. You may also assume that all ".com" domain names are used for, or are supposed to be used for commercial purposes, however, this is not the case today. If this had been defined and enforced from the beginning of the internet, this would be a non-issue, however, to start enforcing it today would cause many individuals to lose their domains. Yes, there are other top level domains they can move to, however, that doesn't alleviate the fact that they would be losing an asset they had invested much time, money, and resources acquiring. Please keep the annual fee very low or consider a more flexible charging system for the .COM top level domain that will keep it accessible to individuals and small businesses. I see no justifications for price increase apart compensation for the inflation rate. Please, avoid to combine the price increase with the service of the companies such as Verisign. I am under no illusion as to the reason for this deal. Pure and simple - GREED. I also know that any public opposition will be completely ignored and probably the most that will happen is that ICANN will issue a statement explaining the excellent, (non-profit), reasons for the need to increase. These of course will be poppycock and of more interest will be the bank statements of the Directors along with lists of any other investment holdings they have. Simply put; they see an opportunity to make more money and believe that everyone will just pay. No doubt their calculations will allow for a percentage loss of registrations, (of which I will be one), but the long term objective of more money will be achieved. In essence, they're no different from a pimp or drug baron. Create a need and market, then hike the prices. At the very least, I would want to see accounts detailing exactly where the money has been invested, (besides 1st class travel everywhere for them). If you've read this far, I'll be very surprised as I really don't think you care what people think. A huge majority of the businesses are small entrepreneurs that earn just enough to cover costs. Increasing prices is acceptable, but it becomes unacceptable when the fee is not controlled. For a company with 10 domains, it is affordable, for a company with 100 domains, it is a considerable cost difference. Most SMEs hold around 50 to 100 domains and it could result easily in shedding of a lot of domains, un renewed business for you and the smaller business which make up the majority. We already get several clients every year who drop their personal domain and hosting as cost saving measures. This can only increase if we have to increase our prices. I strongly object to the removal of limitations in the price increase of .com domains, however ICANN will probably ignore objections like they did in the past despite overwhelming objections from internet property owners. So lets face it, ICANN is no longer there to protect the interests of internet property owners; ICANN is now merely a puppet of American technology corporations. This is classic politics, but it is also the declaration of an economic cyber war if the amendment is passed despite objections. At least ICANN is open about the fact that they now except bribes from Verisign to screw internet property owners. OBJECTIONS 1. Price Increases - If Verisign cannot do the job at the previously agreed price, get a company who will. Dot.com prices increased drastically over the past years for internet property owners in other parts of the world as result of exchange rate fluctuations, despite the USD price being pinned. 2. How can Verisign Operate as a Domain Registrar without gaining an unfair advantage over other registrars? Many countries and even the US have legislation against such practices where companies can push their opposition out of the market based on privileges they have. This does not differ from other white collar crimes, especially in stock market trading. 3. And that brings us to the $20 Million bribe paid by Verisign to ICANN. You can motivate it whichever way you want, it is bribery, corruption and criminal. If Verisign want to donate the amount, let them do it but then they should not have any role in .com TLD registrations other than that of a regular registrar. If this amendment goes through despite objections, be prepared for the backlash.

Why is it always the little paying for the big? The internet is one of the few ways one little entrepreneur is able to make his business known and earn something. How is this going to be possible if the prices increase until the point only the big enterprises will be able to buy a .com domain? We are fed up. This amendment sounds to me like a new step on making .com domains less accessible for individuals. Raising up prices up to 70% or more, if we have into account the past, is vaguely justified. Are salaries going to raise up the same way? Please don't make deals that will end with a less accessible Internet, unless you want an Internet of corporations rather than individuals.
