However, any rise in the range 30% or more is unthinkable, and will kill many busineses, especially those who want to start out new. Hence, do consider carefully the small rise instead. Thank you. Dear ICANN Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. Really ICANN, is Donald fucking Trump running this organisation now too? Hasn't the USA humiliated themselves enough in the last three years? Regards Chris Hunter.

To members of ICANN, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the new ICANN contract with Version which, from my understanding, will allow Verisign " to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and…This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody." I also understand that ICANN will receive 20 million from Verisign over the next 5 years in exchange for allowing Verisign to raise fees in drastic measure mentioned above. Being the sole governing body with policies and decisions that will ultimately impact what consumers will have to pay for the domain services, I am concerned about the actual details that justify this contract. I even wonder if there is any improper or illegal reason for granting Verisign to impose rate hike in such extraordinarily manner? I fear that ICANN becomes the new FDA and Verisign becomes the new pharmaceutical industries, and that we the consumers become the victim of unreasonable price hike! I am here to ask ICANN to provide more details and transparency regarding this contract, and to reconsider whether ICANN has put consumers at the mercy of Verisign’s pricing power in order to receive funding from it. The result of the price increases to .com will tarnish it's reputation as being the entry point to an online presence. The first impressions to future potential business owners down the road to the new prices will cause them to pivot to other tld's. Although not an overnight change, these will stack up as we will see more mainstream marketed domains using other more "modern" tld's, such as ".io" or ".party". This is especially dangerous as more internet savvy demographics shift into consuming and creating the internet. With their already existant extra experiences with domains that don't end with .com, examples like "discord.gg" or "scribl.io", they won't have much issue with shifting to those kinds of tld's.

In this situation if you increase the domain name fee or costing then surely it will effect many of us in terms of business and living. Please consider and discard the price increment program. This deal behind the closed doors to increase cost of .com domains is simply outrageous. There is certainly no issues with current infrastructure and there is no observable performance effect technically with the speed of websites. Ambiguous 20M$ over 5 years is just another form of bribery being reflected to end-users in my eyes. ICANN's main goal should be democratizing internet access which is already fully commercialized to the extent of having many domains parked without an ability to use them due to fees. Rather than increasing cost of domains making it harder for startups a better solution is to simply remove ability to renew domains after 5 years of non-usage which would help public for a better internet experience.

I renew my domains every year and every year my total has slowly been increasing. Increasing prices will drive people to give up hundreds of thousands of domains that will be bought up by domain sharks and encourage domain squatting. It will not make the market more competitive. No idea why I’m even writing this email, it looks like the deal is already done.
