Dear Sir/Madam, It is out of frustration and anger that I send this email to you. I totally object the idea of raising the cost of .com without notice and the cost of maintaining should be lower instead of higher. Now the proposed price increase is outrageous. Even if there is any special reason for raising the price, it should be very mild and reasonable but iI doubt the reason behind such a move. Not only is the scale, and lack of ceiling on the price hikes for .com domains absurd, the fact that Verisign can now act as a reseller of these domains, and happens to be paying ICANN $20 million in relation to these upcoming changes, feels like the beginning of the end of a free and open internet (not to mention a deeply concerning bit of insider dealing). Unclear business dealings aside, increasing domain costs will significantly impact registrars for approximately 40% of the internet, potentially reducing the number of registrars able to operate and, therefore, begin culling Verisign’s competition. Increasing cost will also create a higher barrier of entry for content creators around the world when the remaining registrars are forced to pass costs on to their customers. In short, I’m deeply opposed to the proposed changes, and very uneasy about the lack of transparency in the dealings that have brought the changes forward. To whom it may concern, I learned recently that last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). I also learned that ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action. I am vehemently against price increases that will harm me as a customer (and the Internet as a whole). I would like to state that in the interest of keeping the internet affordable to all I am opposed to Amendment 3! Ed Cintron

It is already overpriced fee to make a new domain and by given a lot of power to Verisign you are working against the principle of free market. These increases are unjustified and there isn’t any plan for how the extra money will be used to make the internet safe or even fair for new business. The internet is built on open standards and protocols, of which DNS is one of the original and most basic. There is no place for private back room deals in a service like this. It’s understandable that a service this old needs some updates and maybe even a larger overall, but this must stay open and in the public, not behind closed-door deals. This should be considered akin to a monopoly as a single company has control over the most popular top-level domain. Obviously and technical advances for any top-level domain should apply to all TLDs, so there is no valid reason Verisign and .com domains should be any different than others. Do not support this amendment.

To Whom It May Concern, I am appalled at your attempt to make significant changes to your contract with Verisign, Inc. in regards to .COM domains without consulting internet users or the ICANN community of domain registrars. These changes would significantly increase wholesale prices in the future, which in turn would greatly affect customers like myself who rely on various domains to run a business. The Internet has become an integral aspect of modern life, which means that many people, like me, will renew their domains for many years to come. These proposed changes would make .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Furthermore, Verisign already controls almost 80% of the registrar pricing for domain names, so allowing it to operate its own registrar or as a reseller would compete directly with all domain registrars, maximizing its control of domain name pricing to the detriment of other registrars. Fewer registrars would harm competition, choice, and domain name services. I strongly OPPOSE any changes to your contract with Verisign, and hope you will not ignore the unified outrage of the internet community, like you've done in the past, out of arrogance and greed. It's completely unnecessary for them to increase the prices: there is no significant operating cost from maintaining the .com registry that warrants such drastic increase. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Dear ICANN, I have seen reports that say a deal is being struck whereby *Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains by 7% each year in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. After a two year freeze, Verisign can increase prices by 7% annually during 2026-2029, then another two year freeze. This cycle will continue. * I'm a micro business owner (writing coach and author). To help me run the various aspects of my business, I have a number of domain names. It's already hard for me to to find room in my budget to keep all my domain names afloat. I've been having to let go of some of them already, even without this series of price increases. That means I've had to let go of entire websites. This negatively affects my livelihood. I just got a mail this morning from Namecheap about a possible hike in the price of the .com tld name. You see, I'm worried about the possible impact this move would have on small businesses like mine. I'm from Nigeria and over here we are under a scorching bundle of unemployment and underemployment. Running an internet-based business has been the saviour or must of us. By increasing the annual domain name, you're literally taking the only source of hope away from millions of people whose only hope of earning pursuing their dreams is through online businesses. Of course, you may have had your reasons for the increment, but can you please, try to sample the opinions of vendors like NameCheap? That way, our concerns can also be carried along in the decision making process.
