I recently read about a price increase that will take place over the next several years for registration/renewal of .com domain names. This is very alarming to me, as a small business owner who works out of my home, with several .com domains. My business expenses are already a significant tax on my revenue and I am concerned about this change. There is little to no information about what this increase is for and what will be done with the funds collected. Making a blanket increase regardless of the size of the business or the revenue is unfair. It makes the internet an exclusive business opportunity for big companies. Couldn't you use some sliding scale that protects small businesses? Transparency calls for this basic service to explain what is going on to all involved. I disagree with increasing prices. This feels like an unfair tax on domains, and people will not have any say in what their money goes towards. .COM domains are a huge portion of domains and I don't want revenue from their price increase to go into private hands. These domains should stay inexpensive and accessible for everyone. It is the right thing to do in the spirit of the internet as the great equalizer of opportunity. Regards, Stephanie

Hi, Please reconsider increasing the fees for .com domains. Having the ability to share ideas and have self-expression on the internet should be widely accessible to the general public. I currently use my .com as a means to promote myself as a UX designer. I can’t even get a callback for an interview without having my work on the internet. This is not tax-deductible, but just a necessary course for my career. I don’t think there should be an increase in fees without permission from the general public, especially a close to 70% increase in price. This is highway robbery. Catherine

Hello, I am the owner of several .com domains, for both personal and creative use. The current proposal to increase .com domains at an arbitrary and BEYOND inflationary rate is unjustified. It is profit mongering and manipulative action by Verisign. Verisign is the manager, not the price dictator. ICANN is the body that keeps the domain name system operating in the public interest. Please ICANN, step up and stop this nonsense. The proposed price increases are inordinately out of proportion and are not in the public interest or good business interest. I am surprised, and very disappointed with ICANN which I have believed be an organization which really looked after the functionality, fairness, etc as regards domain names. Now I see a "deal" was made, that allow Verisign to become register, increase prices, etc, etc, and they are now set up to take full control of the domain name registration, and market, and become a virtual monopoly. It makes one wonder, what "incentives" the ICANN officers have seen, in order to vote for this change. If ICANN want to be trusted and have be considered an organization that can be considered 'reliable, honest, and without corruption" it is important that this agreement is canceled, AND that everything is managed in a transparent way. Please change it and correct what you surely know is wrong. Lars

If you are a non-profit why do you have to entertain a for-profit company, and your deal with Verisign will just kill the reasonable pricing for .com domains. At these times, let the faith of reasonable people be restored on reputed non-profit organisations such as ICANN. Dear Sir or Madam, I overwhelmingly oppose the suggested amendment to the .com registry to increase the cost of .com wholesale domains by more than 70% over and above current prices. It is my belief -- and the belief of the majority of .com registrants and website owners, that the .com registry is a utility that must only suffer increases if inflation or operating costs dictate so. Hello, I'm writing to express concern around the new .com price increase. I run a personal blog every year that results in a net loss every year, but gives back to communities, just the way the internet used to be and was founded on (sharing knowledge). In addition, I have several domain names for hobbies that have helped me learn new technologies. In these cases, the domain increase further adds to that burden and prevents individuals like me from having a chance to free voice and further push my learning through the internet. I understand infrastructure is required to handle domain names, but technology has not only become more efficient but become cheaper. Increasing efficiency and driving down cost should not result in a higher priced product, rather it should result in a more adoptable product that allows others to succeed. Please reconsider this price increase - ICANN wasn't founded for profit, it was founded to make the internet and open place for people to learn, explore, and have a voice. Thank you, Jack

I urge ICANN to retract its proposed new contract with Verisign providing for a series of annual wholesale price increases. As a digital good, one might well expect the price of domain registration to decline over time rather than to rise continuously. An important role of the internet is as a public commons, and it should be a goal of those who enable the foundational structure of the internet to maximize the opportunity for participation rather than erect increasingly higher economic barriers. Domain name registration should be treated as a public utility rather than as a profit center, operated with the minimum expense needed to achieve its goals, and providing a utility-like return on whatever invested capital it requires. Verisign shouldn't have influence over the pricing of domains. These hidden deals need to stop, this method of influencing how the internet is run is corrosive and far more dangerous than a small price increase.
