This is just unbelievable and inexcusable. This is downright criminal. Why? What could these companies gain from gouging internet users? Money... Oh yea. But this move will have fallout, I have just returned from 5 years away from the industry to be side swiped by domain prices... What happened? Now they want to raise prices again? For what reason? How is this justifiable? The fallout is going to come in the form of people looking to expand themselves or their business entity on the internet and being unable to afford it. I find it disingenuous that without any consultation you intend to increase year on year the costs of .com domains. This will have a significant negative effect on my business without any genuine benefits for customer users. I will be forced to look at Google or other free domains. As a consumer of domain registration services, can recall the days where Network Solutions held a monopoly and charged USD $35 per year per domain. Compute and bandwidth costs have only come down in price over time. Hi, I’m writing to express my views on the proposed changes in the contract between Verisign and ICAAN. - There appears to be no transparency in the process - Prices of .com domains are going to go up 8 of the 10 years - There is no clarity on how ICAAN intends to spend $20m in additional funds that it will receive from Verisign over the next 5 years The price increase proposed are outragious and not inline with inflation or increase in real wages (both of which have been stubbornly low). To whom it concerns, I came to learn from my registrar that the ICANN made a new decision over the pricing for the upcoming future of the TLD domains behind doors (well with the presence of Verizon). I would like to ask you to cancel the said amendment, Internet has always been a free place for businesses to thrive and the price increase we as users will see are not acceptable. Therefore I am writing this email to express my disappointment over this decision and to all the decisions that have shadows casted on what will be the impact (and why certain money transactions aren’t that transparent). What's happening? Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. So, what can you do to help? These changes will have significant impact on the Internet for years to come, and only ICANN and Verisign have participated in this decision.
