We are a small business that depends on .COM domains to properly represent our digital properties. Many of these addresses are exploratory, and an up to 70% increase in registration prices will stifle our ability to explore new opportunities and innovate. Too much has been said about the lack of transparency ICANN has demonstrated throughout this renegotiation process - and it is worrisome that an organization that claims to align itself with the pillars of a free and open internet, would pursue such changes in private. Your choices represent a further commercialization of the internet, and it is a damn shame an organization such an ICANN joins the ranks of big tech with this decision today. So you can be bought for $20 million. You're going to allow Verisign to control .COM and raise prices MUCH MUCH faster than inflation just for $20 million dollars! Why not $40 Million or even $100 million after all there are over 250 million registered .COM domains that Verisign will collect over a dollar from each one each year. Boy can you be bought cheep. Verisign stands to make over 2.5 BILLION DOLLARS in the term of the contract even if the prices stay the same and ICANN is only going to get $20 million. Maybe the Department of Commerce and or Department of Justice should have a look at the 19 current directors and the current CEO of ICANN to see if something is going on behind the curtain. What are you going to do with the $20 million, build extravagant new offices? I'm not happy with your complete disregard of the current 250 million+ .COM domain owners. I am one of the .COM domain holders and I strongly oppose the price hikes proposed by Verisign. I think no one except Verisign wants the increase in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Their cost is something in the order of under 25c a domain giving close to a 100% profit. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I am a small business person and have several domain names. I depend on the prices that I pay now for domain names to stay in business. I don’t like how the internet is becoming increasingly monetized. An internet that was suppose to be inclusive and open and free. I don’t like that Icann and Verisign can make plans together and are not accountable. I am against this plan for 7% increases each year. I am against ICANN receiving $20 million with no accountablilty or reason for the money. I am against Verisign operating as a domain registrar. thank you-Linda Hesh

As a new business owner who is counting every cent on his income with baited breath, the below is quite disturbing and not very nice. A Little less parasitic practices would be appreciated Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don't stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure.

The price increase is described by a very vague statement that... "the domain name marketplace had grown more dynamic and concluded that it was in the public interest" ... which is hardly convincing. In this day and age there is no place for a monopolized internet. Free Open Source initiatives are the backbone of countless protocols used with everything we do online. Giving Verizon a benefit like this will be bad for all TLD's in the long run. This is a bad change. Please reconsider it, or scrap it as a whole. If ICANN needs more money then start a GoFundMe. There are plenty of orgs and individuals that are willing to support you if you give them a reason to do so. The new change with Verizon gives them a reason to not do so. Hello icann.org The Internet as we know it has come a long way and has contributed greatly in all facets of life across the globe. The (.com) domain name and era has been pivotal in this growth and it's importance cannot be over emphasized. In Africa we have a saying that "you don't scare off the bird you intend to shoot". The (.com) price increment might create a 'scare' that will prevent your institution from seeing the bigger picture for further development in the Internet and web space. I believe by keeping the price for (.com) domains stable over a longer period we can all focus on development , innovation and collaboration within the domain name community. Simply put we don't have to sell the hen that lays the eggs. I hope my comment will be given some consideration. Thank you.

Few remember SiteFinder with the NXDomain catch all they introduced that literally broke the internet. This was bad for the internet just as is most of this agreement. Don't increase the .COM fees. Keep domains accessible. Find a new provider to administer the .com domain realm. Zac Bowling

I am concerned about the proposed change to the .com registry agreement. I have a few .com domains registered with Namecheap, and the fees they charge are very reasonable and were guaranteed to remain so. They probably will have to break their agreement with their customers if they are charged more for this service. The company I work for relies on reselling domains and I personally own 10 domains. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. How can a particularly organization have monopoly over something that’s used by millions of people throughout the world? A 30% price increase would make life difficult for many domain investors and also discourage many from registering .com domains, especially people from developing countries.

I am shocked at the proposal to increase annual charges for maintenance of existing .com domains (or any other domains for that matter.) There is not clear reason, in fact, that there are any significant costs in maintaining a domain after its registration which justify annual renewal fees of any significant amount. One can argue why the first registration might have a cost, but the cost is much lower in subsequent years, so much lower that it can be argued that a basic fee should cover many years or even a lifetime. Of course, it costs money to remain the core servers for a TLD to respond to requests for where the server is for any subdomain, and to respond to much rarer whois requests. A bulk of the cost of continuing a domain is the cost of billing for the additional year, or so we would see it if we calculated. Domains vary. While the domain "google.com" is fetched extremely frequently, it is also cached almost everywhere, but even so, small domains that are rarely referenced incur extremely low costs to maintain and serve. It might be reasonable to assess an annual charge, even an increasing annual charge, for a high use domain, but for low-use domains, there should be no annual cost at all. Instead, cost should come only when wishing to change data, and even then only if the change is unusual and not automated. The cost for the computers is trivial and dropping with time on Moore's Law curves. It is only the cost of programming and sysadmin which increase with time. For the latter, if more revenue is needed, make it for new registrations in a domain, not the maintenance of old ones.
