To whom it may concern, I am an artist whose practice depends upon my website. I recently became aware of the proposed amendment, which would encourage a hike in prices for .com domains. Artists like me can not afford a price increase, and I strongly oppose any change which would bring one about. Every small strain stresses the entire edifice of my work. I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. ICANN, The core infrastructure costs of supporting a Registry are not incrementally more expensive at the same level as allowed in the current agreement. Please DO NOT allow for the increase of pricing on .com domains. The majority of the clients I work with are small businesses and adding or increasing digital expenses on them will not help them. Hi, as a small business owner where every penny counts, and relying on the internet as our marketplace, increasing the cost of domain names will have far reaching effects. I just ask that both you and Verisign be more transparent and fair in what you're putting together. In an age of dwindling accountability and transparency by the government, the people are looking for companies and leaders that give us the respect to do the right thing, even when nobody's looking. My concerns specifically are: 1. Large price increases over the next 10 years. 2. What the $20 million from Verisign will be used for. 3. Why you're breaking your own rules or allowing for a loophole to allow Verisign, an operator of a TLD, to act as a registrar. 4. The fact that you ignored previous comments that overwhelmingly favored not removing the price controls on other TLD's, and removed the price caps based on an analysis by an economics professor that didn't reference any data. I hope someone takes the time to read this and actually cares enough to rethink this strategy, as it will not be a good PR move for ICANN or Verisign if it goes into effect in its current form, as it wreaks of abuse of power at the expense of nearly everyone. To read that the cost of operating my business is to rise significantly with this new agreement with Verisign is disturbing and upsetting. Please don't do this. You guys are already minting free money just by being the first players on the scene. This harms everyone and only enriches a few people. This is the epitome of a capitalism/regulatory loophole and those taking advantage should be happy with the next to free, consistent stream of income that already exists. Hello ICANN, Thanks to Namecheap I found out about this Proposed Amendment and since I’m also a customer as well as a developer I want to share my concern. First of, I’m guessing this comment/mail will be one of the many that will not be read but lets hope for the best. Since ICANN registers most if not all domain names I partially understand why this proposal would be nice for ICANN however It would be a grave mistake in how I see it. The .com domain name is the most popular domain name along the website owners and (web hosting) companies due to it’s low price, recognizability and therefor high value. When the ICANN fee will increase so will the price at companies such as Namecheap and that will immensely lower the value of the .com domain name (or maybe even more domain names). Long term this will mean that less people will use this as it’s to expensive and it will lose the value among the biggest target audience; developers. What happens when the .com domain loses this audience? It will lose the recognizability. More people will look for other, cheaper solutions that may even be subdomains under sites like Wix, Jimdo, Glitch, Heroku ect. To make a short summary, just keep it cheap, play the long run. It will make the customers happy and make earn ICANN more money (thanks to the increasing amount of students / developers with a lower budget). Kind regards, Ruben

I ONLY support the increase IF the domain hoarders/squatters RECEIVE increase than legitimate domain holders. DOMAIN OWNERS MUST be required to activate and demonstrate ACTUAL USE of their domains on a regular basis. Use the increased fees to pay for labor for this verification process.

Dear ICANN, As a web developer, I must say that I would not support the price increases. Instead, I would look for alternative extensions to use, with such increases it would make other, already more expensive, domain names more suitable. Or I would start using cheaper URL extensions that were currently undervalued. I do not support this idea for the world to keep increasing its prices on things while it becomes more difficult for us in the tech industry to remain competitive and to be able to survive.

ICANN announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and with no language to freeze future increases. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. These changes will have significant impact on the Internet for years to come, and only ICANN and Verisign have participated in this decision. As one who holds several domain names and a small business owner, this is alarming and should not be implemented without significant input from all stakeholders. In an age when we desperately need clarity and fairness, this is an utter disgrace.

And why should Verisign, which merely manages the .com registry, decide the price? The Continue button does nothing. Well done good job. This is another regrettable example of ICANN putting itself ahead of the interests of the users of the internet. A commercial enterprise like Verisign shouldn’t be in charge of this to begin with, let alone given free reign to price the annoying individuals out of the market and reserve the net for their large corporate friends. I don’t believe it is in the interest of the ICANN community or internet users, that Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years. .com domains are the most popular and widespread domains. The expense to .com domain holders will increase significantly and cause a cascade of other price increases making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. It is unclear who will in the end benefit from the increased revenue and the payout to ICANN of 20 million. It is unclear how these changes are going to benefit the infrastructure as a whole or the future of the internet.
