I have heard about the deal ICANN has made with Verisign to significantly increase costs of .com domains over the next ten years. As a major component of the internet, access to .com domains is an important feature of the internet. Please reconsider your agreement and aim to have future conversations that could affect wide ranges of small communities more publicly in the future. -Ben

I am concerned about the amendment as it affects my personal small businesses and those of the students I coach to open their own small businesses. I always encourage students to use namecheap as it is such a great price for what you are getting and a reliable company. This price increase will majorly impact costs for small business owners and many may change providers after years of loyalty to namecheap due to the way the amendment was handled without respect to loyal customers. Please consider our requests as we’d like to stay with you without such a drastic price increase. Dear Madam, or Sir, I am concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement because it will affect, not just me, buy any individual who would like their own domain name. I am 100% sure that no corporation will object to the 28% cost increase every six years as they earn money off their domain name and paying almost any amount would be acceptible to them. However, there are a great deal of small businesses that would see this as a burden as well as individual users out there that have purchased their own domain name and are using it for personal use, not commercial use. Several of us have multiple domain names, if for no other reason than to protect our own names from being used to run a website. I personally have about 6 that I use to protect myself and my family while also allowing my children to be able to have a domain name that is exclusively theirs. 20 year Cost analysis: $ 7.85 / year 2018 $10.29 / year 2023 (31% increase over 2018) $13.49 / year 2029 (72% increase over 2018) $17.68 / year 2035 (125% increase over 2018) $23.17 / year 2041 (195% increase over 2018) I am aware that the 7% is a maximum per year for each of the four years and, theoretically, there could be no increase or a sub 7% increase some years, however, I have little faith on this being the norm and, most certainly, CANNOT plan on it being any less than the full 7% in any fiscal plans made. I understand it would be extremely difficult for you to create a regulation that would charge businesses more and individuals less, however, that may be what is required at this time. This would leave a loophole for businesses to have an individual register their domain name, however, no corporation of any size will be willing to leave their domain names in private hands. This would also allow fledgling businesses (aka startups) to keep their costs low at first. Remember, many businesses have been started in individual's garages. You may also assume that all ".com" domain names are used for, or are supposed to be used for commercial purposes, however, this is not the case today. If this had been defined and enforced from the beginning of the internet, this would be a non-issue, however, to start enforcing it today would cause many many individuals to lose their domains. Yes, there are other top level domains they can move to, however, that doesn't alleviate the fact that they would be losing an asset they had invested much time, money, and resources acquiring. Please keep the annual fee very low or consider a more flexible charging system for the .COM top level domain that will keep it accessible to individuals and small businesses. -- Bob Madewell

Yet again backroom deals are constraining the internet and its original vision. This from your own website - "It (ICANN) promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet's unique identifiers. Through its coordination role of the Internet's naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet." How then does a secret deal with a single entity like Verisign which is for profit while you are non-profit in any promote competition. If Verisign doesn't want the .com TLD they can sell it not use it like a cash cow with ICANN's explicit and implicit agreement. If you continue on this path, be honest and change your raison d'etre. The changes in the Verisign contract for the next upcoming years will be devastating to many people, raising the domain prices is going to shut down many sites. Especially the smaller non-profit ones without ads. Sure, the initial $20 million up front is nice for your organization, but in the long run you are very likely to lose business and will harm the infrastructure of the internet, upsetting millions of people. I highly suggest not raising the prices much, if at all. I personally will no longer use any services or products offered by ICANN if things get out of hand. Thank you for your time. - Josh

I do not support the proposed price increases Verisign will be allowed to charge to registrars for the .COM domain. 7% increases for 4 years straight is excessively steep given the inflation environment and the productivity gains for a high-tech business model. I am also against allowing VeriSign, the operator of a TLD, to also operate as domain registrar. This self-dealing arraignment is rife for abuse and should not be allowed under any circumstance. ICANN, This proposal will allow for .com prices to increase by more than 70% in the next decade, decreasing access to important technology. Information deserves a free an open platform to be disseminated and it takes the hard-earned dollars of individuals to ensure a diverse internet of ideas. By allowing for a price increase, you'll be limiting the access to publishing on a trusted domain name to those who have access to capital. If, instead, internet giants like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google contributed their profits to ICANN (and other internet backbone services), we could maintain the cost of providing domain services without penalizing those who do not have the means to contribute more than a few bucks a month toward a website. Hi, I am internet user and I have the website on my own. I run a very small business and currently I pay to Godaddy for using my .com website. Recently I heard that you are increasing the. Com fee which will eventually increase the fee I Pay to Godaddy. I am sure there are many other like me in the same boat who owns small business but cannot afford to pay any more than what we are paying already. It is highly disappointing to hear the news that you are increasing the fees.
