I’m opposed to the proposed amendment No. 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I’ve contributed to the development of the Worldwide Web since 1991 as a software developer and journalist and I’ve owned domain names since 1994. The Internet has become a major force in global society based on a model of non-governmental, non-commercial governance of key protocols and supporting institutions. Amendment 3 is a massive step away from the established (and successful) governance of the Internet toward a system that provides exclusive benefit to limited commercial stakeholders. It is inappropriate for ICANN as stewards of the domain name system to provide favorable commercial terms to Verisign. The close relationship between Verisign and ICANN invites corruption and abuse of stewardship. Increases in .COM fees that benefit Verisign’s shareholders are unhealthy for the larger Internet community and violate the principles on which the Internet was established. -- Daniel Kehoe daniel(a)danielkehoe.com

Hi, I own and control about 10 .com domains. I am an IT professional. With the prices for IT resources dropping so fast, it does not make sense to increase the cost to have a database entry made to track a registered domain. Unless of course the only reason is to increase profit (when profit should already be increasing with the above mentioned reduction in costs incurred) in a drastic manner and disregard the internet community as a whole. If you look at all other IT industries where there are competitors, the prices tend to continually decrease over time, or the resources offered for the same prices tend to increase. It's unfortunate that there is a monopoly on .com registration so this becomes a captive market. If this goes thru I will unfortunately be put in a position to send in complaints to the various regulators which control various aspects of the Internet or the organisations which are using the Internet. This of course includes Verizon and ICANN. This will probably involve the various EU organisations which are concerned with competition and other consumer matters, since the US government does not seem to be so interested in this, EU or other big governments will hopefully take an interest in such matters. Dear, Price gauging by a monopoly is unethical and legally questionable. Top-level domain names are a de-facto public utility and monopoly, so prices should be tightly regulated. If ICANN fails to do this, as is evidently the case considering what happened to .org and is now happening to .com, the responsibility should be transferred to another authority sooner rather than later. What is currently going on is rent-seeking and abuse of power, and should have consequences for the people in charge at ICANN. best regards, kurt.

The proposal under consideration lacks transparency and exposure to the vast number of clients using the .com domain for their sites. It is not clear how this might impact domain name owners except in as much as it implies steep changes to pricing over the coming years. It would be more prudent to be more open about the process, reasons and approach, allow more people time to comment and come up with a pricing proposal that is less likely to creat sticker shock in the clients you serve. To whom it may concern, I would like to express protest at the proposed amendment 3 to the .com registry agreement. I have learned that these changes have occurred without consultation or feedback from the ICANN community and internet users. It is my concern that the proposed amendments are directly harmful to individuals and small businesses who rely on an accessible and affordable .com registry agreement. As an operator of numerous small, non-profit websites focused on hobby and social communities, this change, and the resulting increase in registration fees by up to 70% over the next ten years, will undoubtedly impact my ability to provide these services and websites to the internet community -- this makes small .com websites considerably more inaccessible to non-business users, who gain nothing from the proposal! Hello, This is in regards to the proposed amendments by Verisign for increasing prices of .com domains. We know that a business needs to increase its prices to remain sustainable in the market. However, it is also seen that the prices of .com domains are already quite high and increasing prices even further will put a burden on small business owners who want to get online with a website but can’t as the expenses will be increased quite a lot. Particularly in the third-world countries, we know that people are coming online for selling and making money but the increased costs of buying a domain and other expenses will discourage them from doing so and will have a negative effect on the internet population in general.
