I'm writing to oppose giving Verisign even more market power in domain registrations, which would mean price increases. The openness of the Internet to all participants, large and small, is vital. As a very small scale owner of two domain names, I am far from alone in wanting to be able to afford an internet presence in the future.

I am a registrant of a .com domain name. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. If price hiking is merely for covering necessary governance costs, I would agree in order to ensure quality of service. If price hiking is merely for profit, I disagree under the premise that the internet is a public infrastructure. If price hiking is to address cybersquatting domain naim abuse by making it less profitable for abusers (who buy thousands of $5 domains to just put them for sale for $5,000 each without adding $5,000 of value, then I have a big problem - that would be making the good cybercitizens pay for both the bad AND proof that ICAAN can’t do their job WHILE amassing a ton of profit which instead should be used as a fund to attack cybersquatting! The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Dear Sir or Madam, I am against the ICANN and Verisign agreement to increase the prices of .COM domains. The prices has been $7.85 since 2012, and I believe it should stay the same. .COM domains make up a large percentage of registered domain names and the proposed decision to increase the prices would impact many business and individuals who use .COM domains. It would make these domains less accessible if the prices increase. I personally own two domain names and as an individual it would effect me if the prices are increased. Of course the price increase will not financially break me, but it should not be increased as this will lead to a monopoly, where the prices could be increased without limit. The decision to increase .COM domain prices will not have positive effects, but would cause many people and business to abandon their .COM domains and switch to more affordable domain names. Specially of an intangible good that basically masks an IP address and should not even be sold in the first place. My questions would be: How do you justify this? This is totally absurd to allow a single company to own and operate a TLD .com which is by far the most used TLD. This reduces competition in the domain registration business but also creates a monopoly market where Verisign can do whatever they want. I would like to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. I believe that the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. These price hikes will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. Further, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal. Best regards -Aapo Alasuutari

I know there is a sporadic rise in how domains, websites are springing up on the internet. Albeit, truthfully, the sky is wide enough for all birds to fly and gasing all fatally is never an ideal way to control population increase, I believe we're smart enough to figure better ways to go about this, and so do I believe that this is not a case of greed creeping in. Kindly do not implement the proposed change. Thank you.
