Dear ICANN, As the onroad to a web experience, increasing the price of dot coms is going to affect many people and when the competition for IDNs are increasing, the dot com price should be dropping. Rethink amendment 3, otherwise you will end up making dot coms irrelevant. Having read the proposed amendment 3 to the .COM registry agreement, I have to oppose it. The compounded increases of 7% annually over a 10 year period would put the wholesale, and therefore the retail, cost of .COM domains totally out of range with the services performed by ICANN. To support such increases I would have to see more detailed cost breakdown of ICANN that could justify such increases given ICANN has assets of almost $500 million dollars. To whom it may concern, I am shocked and appalled this Proposed Amendment 3 to the .COM registry is even being proposed and considered. There is absolutely NO justification to why there should be any increase for a .COM domain. I work with many individuals and small businesses in my daily work as a Freelancer and this WOULD affect their businesses, including mine, and decisions that they make moving forward for no other reason other than greed. ICANN should think long and hard about the true purpose of this proposal and make the correct decision of completely throwing it out.

The proposed deal with Verisign seems anti-competitive and anit-consumer. It is just a profit grab that is completely disconnected from the actual cost of registering a domain, and will have a sizable negative impact on individual developers like myself. I am associated with the secondary market in domain names. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Dear ICANN, I'm dismayed to hear that ICANN has proposed allowing substantial fee increases for maintaining .COM TLDs. Over the past decade, I've watched the internet grow more and more homogenous as a small handful of corporate platforms gradually wall off users in tightly regulated platforms. The expression and creativity of the early internet was largely fueled by how easy it was for individual end users to plant a flag and manage their own sites, at their own domain. Raising the barriers to running individual sites hurts everyone on the internet, especially people who create content, products, or services, that compete with big platforms or run afoul of their murky censorship guidelines. As far as I'm aware, the administrative overhead for maintaining the domain registry has remained mostly stable. Keeping domain costs stable for end users will encourage the participation of good internet citizens and make the internet a more diverse, creative, and democratic space. Hi ICANN team, Please amend your proposal to allow Verisign raise fees for .COM domains. The domains are already expensive as they are for individuals and small businesses. Internet and IT have always demonstrated economies of scale. While I understand that there are costs involved to maintain the security of it, Verisign should be addressing them through innovation and by lowering the expenses for domain registration, and then using those efficiency gains to drive other important goals. If other companies can do it, Verisign has no excuse. Only companies who have monopoly and do not innovate allow themselves to raise prices. Raising prices and not innovating is not good for consumers or 21st century society when we should be internet more accessible for people. Owning a .COM domain should not be a luxury, and therefore any price increases is a step in the wrong direction. Thank you, Alex Kamotsky

I am a .COM owner. Without any clarity on why the increase in fees and how a $20M investment behind closed doors from Verisign will help the public, I am opposed to this change. The proposed approach will diminish the democratic nature of the Internet by increasing the cost of using a .com domain (arguably the most popular TLD) at a time when the public has been acquiring the skills to finally become tech savvy enough, that profits are to be made by sheer quantity, without the need for increased margins. Your organisation holds all the power to allow this industry to be sustainable in the long term without forcing a peak in the short term. You’re bound to make a profit in whichever format, but the advances that made the Web 2.0 so welcome — transitioning from institution-generated content to user-generated content — will drive away the regular users as domain hosts and leave the huge players in control. A back room deal between ICANN and Verisign really feels like the bad old days of big business forming cartels and trusts that benefit big business at the expense of consumers and smaller businesses. There needs to be some independent oversight and check on the power of big organizations like ICANN and Verisign, and clearly that oversight cannot come from the U.S. Federal Government's executive branch, which has proven itself corrupt and beholden to the interests of business at the expense of individuals. Further, the .COM Registry Agreement has impacts well beyond the borders of the United States, so any oversight needs to not only be independent, but international-perhaps an entity like the World Trade Organization could fill this role. At any rate, two powerful organizations ramming price increases down the throats of individuals and small businesses all over the world is not only counter to the egalitarian, democratic ideal of the Internet, but it also smacks of corporate malfeasance and bullying. I concede that ICANN may need additional funds to enhance the security of the Internet, and that we may well be due for an increase in registration costs to keep up with rising prices in all areas, but this is not the way to do it because there is a clear conflict of interest and an unchecked monopoly. For these reasons, I urge a rejection of amendment 3 until the amending process becomes more open, inclusive, transparent, and subject to truly independent oversight.
