ICANN has a monopoly on .com domains and they are administered by Verisign with no competition. Allowing Verisign to raise prices is only going to have only one outcome — prices will increase at the maximum rate allowed by the agreement. That’s going to make Verisign a ton of money in exchange for a paltry $20 million that will go to benefit the community at large. Either create some competition by allowing a bunch (e.g. 5-10) of players to compete with Verisign for the administration business on an on-going basis (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc have a choice between Verisign, Player B, Player C, etc so they can’t just jack up prices), or setup a system where prices stay flat year over year (so Verisign has an incentive to increase efficiency). I am a young musician with a recent .com website. I am only making enough money to pay so many expenses. Musicians and other artists don't make a lot of money most of the time. Did you know that musicians are paid the same for live performances that they were paid in the 1980s sometimes less. But without a .com site nobody will find me as the other endings are not memorable or respected in the same way. The internet should be a place where people can share there work, ideas, and products without heavy taxation. Everything else will go up if you raise .com prices. To all who are concerned: We live in a world where transparency, equality and integrity can finally be upheld to a basic, universal standard. In business, we can lie, cheat and beguile our customers now to our own demise. The Internet itself has provided its own natural judicial system where the public has a voice through comments and open forum discussions, this being a prime example. ICANN and its constituents, while uniquely positioned and tied into the world of online access, are not above any laws that apply to each of us. We must abide by these laws fairly, justly and universally. ICANN is no exception and I on behalf of myself, my own business and the many businesses I proudly call clients, stand against the secrecy and price gouging in which ICANN loosely engages. Dear Madam, or Sir, I am concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement because it will affect, not just me, but any individual who would like their own domain name. I am 100% sure that no corporation will object to the 28% cost increase every six years as they earn money off their domain name and paying almost any amount would be acceptable to them. However, there are a great deal of small businesses that would see this as a burden as well as individual users out there that have purchased their own domain name and are using it for personal use, not commercial use. Several of us have multiple domain names, if for no other reason than to protect our own names from being used to run a website. I personally have about 4 that I use to protect myself and my family while also allowing my child to be able to have a domain name that is exclusively theirs. I understand it would be extremely difficult for you to create a regulation that would charge businesses more and individuals less, however, that may be what is required at this time. This would leave a loophole for businesses to have an individual register their domain name, however, no corporation of any size will be willing to leave their domain names in private hands. This would also allow fledgling businesses (aka startups) to keep their costs low at first. Remember, many businesses have been started in individual's garages. You may also assume that all ".com" domain names are used for, or are supposed to be used for commercial purposes, however, this is not the case today. If this had been defined and enforced from the beginning of the internet, this would be a non-issue, however, to start enforcing it today would cause many many individuals to lose their domains. Yes, there are other top level domains they can move to, however, that doesn't alleviate the fact that they would be losing an asset they had invested much time, money, and resources acquiring. Please keep the annual fee very low or consider a more flexible charging system for the .COM top level domain that will keep it accessible to individuals and small businesses. Thank you, Vinod Nair

I've had a small website for the past 10 years to share photos. I'm hoping one day I will be able to use the URL for a real business, but right now I'm not making any money off of it, so if .com prices increase it will be hard to justify continuing to holding onto it. I'd be more likely to just move everything to a Facebook page. As a nonprofit with global stewardship over one of the most valuable resources of our time, I hope that ICANN will consider the small voices of the internet and protect affordable .com URLs for the small voices of the internet.

To Whom It May Concern, I’m submitting my comment against the proposed amendments to the .com registry agreement: 1) ICANN and Verisign made these changes in secret without input from the public. 2) A 70% price increase over the next 10 years with no public input. 3) The amendment proposes Verisgn pay ICANN an additional $20 million. There is no oversight for how ICANN will spend this money. 4) Unfair business practices - the ICANN rules is that the operator of a TLD can’t also be a domain name registrar.
