To whomever it concerns, I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The Internet was a space of freedom, and that it should remain. To ensure this freedom, anybody should be able to own a domain name, the only entry barrier being technical competency (which is lowered every day thanks to new management services). A domain name price should never be a barrier preventing people from owning their place on the Internet. If the proposed price increase is due to Verisign finding that the dot com registry is a hassle, I am sure you should be able to find another organisation willing to handle that without needing to increase the price. Better yet, maybe you should anyway ask for another handler for the dot com registry, one that could make these domain even cheaper and, more importantly, one that should be non US based. I see no justification for why .COM prices should increase. Verisign is already reporting operating margins around 60% and pays their CEO (*one person*) over $9 million *per year*. I am writing to express my opposition to proposed Amendment 3 of the .COM Registry Agreement. I am the registrant of multiple .com domains. Given the current issues with the proposed .ORG takeover, it would be inadvisable to consider any changes to other TLDs until those issues are resolved. Furthermore, were it not for those issues, the proposed .COM price hike is unjustified. Although I am not privy to Verisign's financials, I have seen it estimated that their costs per domain registered range from $1 to $3.50. This gives them a current profit margin of ~60%. Given that ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest, not in Verisign's interest, and that a profit margin of 60% is extremely high in any indistry, ICANN should instead be proposing to lower .COM prices. Dear ICANN, Thank you for your time to read my comments. To explain briefly about myself, I am a senior engineer at Verizon working in the field of ML and software engineering. I understand that, compared to Verisign, I am but a simple registrant of .com domains; but I want to at least voice my disagreements with the price inflation in the hope that the majority is thinking along the same line. The way that I see it with my limited knowledge of the internal discussions, this proposal is on par with the removal of net neutrality by the FCC. Yes, there will be numerous fake/repeated comments flowing for the advocacy of this proposal. Yes, perhaps the price hike may benefit the registrants - although I fail to see how. And yes, perhaps the 31% price increase through 2024 is justifiable and in the interest of the public (which I hope the board would elaborate with more details to the public for their understanding). But in the higher scheme of things, are both FCC's proposal and the ICANN's proposal in the best interest of the people and not the few? Are we also sure that the price hike - and the subsequent hikes in the future - will not extinguish the ability of the young, future generations of coders due to new and escalating financial burdens? Since 1978, the cost of college tuition was artificially inflated by 1,120%, medical care by 601%, housing by 380% while the pay for the workers decreased by the average of 5~10%. Although this statistics is circumscribed to the United States, I think this numbers aren't foreign to other countries. I may be able to afford this new changes, but I cannot speak for the future generations who would be required to have to bear the burden. Now I'm not saying that I want to prevent any price hikes in the future. If it is justified, reasonable, and best communicated to others, I may be able to come to an understanding. One thing is sure. If the price hike is no longer affordable to me, I won't be able to purchase new domains for my programming ideas and concepts - and simply watch the financial giants slowly take over the Internet. As the actual cost to manage each domain is in the neighborhood of 2.30$, the current rate of $7.85 already seems more than justified. To be frank, no one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. As they have a monopoly over the. COM domains, they won't be using that money to better compete...this really looks like it's all about profits. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I fail to see how lack of competition is in the public interest, but I'm sure you're stuck with the Verisign situation, whether you like it or not. If you're going to approve price hikes for a monopoly, however, you really need to make sure the public is sold on the idea by explaining how it will benefit us. After reading all the other previous comments I feel as if there is not much more that needs to be said. The increases start churning people significant profits, and those same increases give nothing back to those (often individuals such as myself) no additional benefit to the cost which is going to increase each year. So here's what's going to happen. I'm going to end up dropping my two .com domains, from there some hoarder will park them just because it was something that once existed, they're really not worth while for anyone, but in my case as like many others the net will be an ever increasing wasteland of abandoned domains that are all parked by others trying to sell domains. Pretty soon it'll be like a dark alley with a guy in a trench coat trying to sell you a domain! Anyways, jokes aside, this ability for everyone to start jacking up prices is going to be a slippery slope that's going to benefit no one other than the person that want's more money themselves with nothing in exchange for the increases. Hello, I am a registrant of a multiple .com domain names. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price.
